Zohran Mamdani had hidden Disney movie cameo 9 years ago

He’s the talk of the town today, and with good reason. Zohran Mamdani was officially confirmed yesterday as the next mayor of New York City, following a decisive victory in the 2025 election. His win was not just a victory for him personally, but a symbolic moment for the city, signaling a shift toward fresh leadership and new perspectives in one of the world’s most influential urban centers.

Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the first mayor of South Asian heritage, captured more votes than all other candidates combined, including prominent figures such as Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. His landslide victory reflected broad support across demographics, from longtime residents to young voters seeking change and a city government that reflects New York’s diversity.

At just 34 years old, Mamdani is poised to become the youngest NYC mayor in over a century. Remarkably, less than a year ago, his name was virtually unknown to much of the city. His rapid rise highlights not only his political skill but also a hunger among New Yorkers for leadership that speaks to contemporary challenges and opportunities.

At his election night rally outside the Brooklyn Paramount, Mamdani delivered a speech that underscored New York’s identity as a city built by immigrants:

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant.”

His speech didn’t stop there. In a pointed moment that grabbed national attention, he directly addressed President Donald Trump, delivering four succinct words to the former president:

“Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up!”

For someone who was barely known to the public just 12 months ago, this was an explosive and confident statement — a bold declaration that Mamdani was ready to engage directly with national politics, while asserting the power of local governance.

The Democratic Socialist mayor-elect is also the son of acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, celebrated for directing Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay!. Mamdani’s ties to the film industry go beyond his mother’s work. Nine years ago, he even appeared in a Disney movie.

In 2016, he contributed to Queen of Katwe, a film based on the real-life story of Phiona Mutesi, a young Ugandan girl who rose from humble beginnings to become a world chess champion. Mamdani served as the third assistant director and music supervisor while also appearing on screen as a minor character credited as “Bookie Student.” Adding yet another layer to his diverse background, he performed a rap song, #1 Spice, under the artist name Young Cardamom, which featured in the film’s soundtrack.

Interestingly, Mamdani also influenced his mother’s career decisions. In 2018, Nair revealed that he persuaded her to turn down a major Harry Potter directing opportunity offered by Warner Bros., encouraging her instead to focus on directing The Namesake. As Nair explained to Screenrant, “He said to me, ‘Mama, many good directors can make Harry Potter, but only you can make The Namesake.’” This anecdote illustrates Mamdani’s ability to combine strategic thinking with a keen sense of purpose — qualities that now accompany him into public office.

Entering the mayor’s office, Mamdani faces immense pressure, not just from the demands of governing New York City, but also from the broader national spotlight. His tenure begins amid continuing tensions with Washington and former President Donald Trump, with whom he clashed repeatedly during the election campaign.

During his victory speech, Mamdani framed his election as a broader moment of resistance and renewal:

“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” he said.
“This is not only how we stop Trump. It’s how we stop the next one. So Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: ‘Turn the volume up’.”

Trump responded via Truth Social hours after the results, writing, “…AND SO IT BEGINS!” signaling that the political tension between the two figures would likely continue to make headlines.

Now, all eyes are on Mamdani. Can this young, dynamic, and multifaceted leader balance the enormous responsibilities of the mayor’s office, navigate national scrutiny, and deliver tangible improvements for New Yorkers? With his combination of political vision, creative background, and energetic advocacy, he certainly brings a unique profile to City Hall.

The question now remains: will Zohran Mamdani rise to the occasion as mayor of New York? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain — the city’s future is about to be written under new, historically significant leadership.
