The search for Lia Smith, a 21-year-old Middlebury College student, has ended in tragedy, leaving her family, friends, and campus community in deep mourning. Lia had been missing for nearly a week, and her disappearance sparked fear, anxiety, and an outpouring of support from those who knew her.

Lia was reported missing by her father on Sunday, October 19, just two days after she was last seen on campus. Concern quickly spread among students, faculty, and local authorities, as every passing hour without news deepened the worry that something terrible had occurred.

From the beginning, volunteers and authorities mobilized, determined to find Lia safe. Her absence left a void in the hearts of friends, classmates, and teammates, and the entire community joined in spreading awareness, praying for her return.

The Vermont State Police led an extensive, multi-agency search effort that spanned several days, employing drones, K9 units, and ground teams. Each wooded trail, riverbank, and rural property near Middlebury College was carefully examined in a painstaking effort to locate her.

By Wednesday, October 22, the search escalated significantly. Teams from the Middlebury Fire Department, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue joined forces. Volunteers from the community, students, and faculty tirelessly combed the area, determined to bring Lia home.

Social media amplified the search efforts. Students shared photos, last-known locations, and pleas for help. Messages urging vigilance spread quickly, reaching people far beyond Vermont, as the hope of finding Lia alive motivated thousands.

But the following day — Thursday, October 23, around 1:30 p.m. — a devastating discovery was made. Lia’s body was found in a field near The Knoll, a beloved area on campus known for its organic farm and tranquil outdoor study spaces.

The Vermont Police Department confirmed that the remains belonged to Lia Smith, ending the weeklong search in heartbreak. Families and friends were immediately notified, and grief washed over the community like a tidal wave.

Authorities released a statement noting that no evidence of foul play was discovered at the scene. The Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office later concluded that Lia had died by suicide, shocking and saddening all who knew her.

Middlebury College President Ian Baucom released an emotional statement expressing collective sorrow. “I have spoken with Lia’s family to express my heartbreak,” he wrote. “As president, and far more as a fellow parent, I ache for them. This is a profound loss that nobody should have to endure.”

President Baucom further commended the staff and volunteers who tirelessly supported both the search efforts and the emotional well-being of the student body. Their compassion during such a challenging time underscored the strength of the Middlebury community.

Lia was widely admired not only for her intelligence and drive but for her kindness and empathy. She was a diver on the Women’s Swimming and Diving Team, a member of the Chess Club and the Japanese Club, and an outspoken advocate for transgender rights.

Professors and classmates alike described Lia as “articulate, driven, and endlessly curious,” someone who brought warmth, inspiration, and positivity into every space she entered. Her presence was both comforting and motivating to those around her.

Academically, Lia pursued a challenging double major in computer science and statistics. Her diligence and passion for learning made her stand out among her peers. She often helped classmates study, offering encouragement and guidance in ways that went far beyond what was expected.

On the swimming and diving team, Lia quickly distinguished herself. In 2022, she won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events during a December tournament, reflecting her dedication, discipline, and natural talent.

Her athletic achievements were more than accolades; they were symbols of her perseverance and determination. Coaches and teammates remember her as a leader, someone who motivated others and helped create a sense of unity and camaraderie on the team.

Lia’s family and friends have since shared heartfelt tributes. Candlelight vigils were held at The Knoll, where students and faculty gathered to honor her memory, leaving messages, flowers, and tokens of love and remembrance.

Messages poured in from classmates, teammates, and community members. Many emphasized how Lia’s kindness, energy, and generosity had touched countless lives, leaving an impact that could never be erased.

Her death has sparked renewed dialogue about the pressures students face, mental health awareness, and the importance of emotional support in academic environments. The college has reminded students that counseling and help are always available.

Lia’s passing has underscored a critical truth: no one should ever feel isolated in the face of overwhelming pain. The college community has rallied to provide resources, hotlines, and compassionate support for anyone struggling with their mental health.

Beyond academics and athletics, Lia was a devoted advocate for inclusion and equality. Her voice and actions reflected a deep commitment to creating safe, accepting spaces for all, especially transgender individuals navigating college life.

Tributes highlight the multifaceted life Lia led: scholar, athlete, activist, and friend. Her legacy is a tapestry of achievements, love, and encouragement, illustrating the breadth of her character in her short 21 years.

As the campus mourns, students, faculty, and staff continue to honor her memory. Scholarships, awareness campaigns, and memorial events have been proposed to ensure that her life’s positive impact continues to resonate for years to come.

Though her life was tragically cut short, Lia Smith’s story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life, the weight of mental health struggles, and the lasting importance of compassion and community.

Rest in peace, Lia Smith. Your courage, kindness, and brilliance will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew you, a guiding light that will forever illuminate Middlebury College and beyond.
