Authorities in Colorado say two hunters who went missing during an elk hunting trip were killed by a lightning strike. Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin confirmed that preliminary findings show Andrew Porter and Ian Stasko, both 25, were struck while in the Rio Grande National Forest.
Martin described their injuries as consistent with “a pretty intense electrical jolt,” noting small burn marks typical of lightning-related injuries. Full autopsy reports are expected within eight weeks to officially confirm the cause and manner of death. Porter and Stasko were reported missing on September 13 after failing to return from the Rio de Los Pinos Trailhead.
Their vehicle was located with camping gear and backpacks still inside, raising concerns as heavy rain and rough weather swept the area. A large-scale search effort involving air crews, dog teams, drones, and local volunteers followed. Nearly a week later, on September 18, their bodies were discovered.

Family members, who had remained hopeful throughout the search, later confirmed the tragic news. Porter’s fiancée, Bridget Murphy, said he had been in regular contact during the trip, sending updates until his final message on September 11. The couple had been preparing for their wedding in the coming months. Loved ones remembered both men as skilled and prepared outdoorsmen, though unpredictable mountain conditions likely played a role in the tragedy. A GoFundMe page set up by Porter’s aunt has asked for continued support and prayers for both families as they grieve their loss.
