Known affectionately as \u201cGeorge Lopez is known across the world for his dark comedy that\u2019s often rooted from his own childhood experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 63-year-old Hollywood Walk of Famer admits he has \u201cdaddy issues\u201d after being abandoned by his parents, who left him in the care of his peculiar grandmother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c[She] was very mysterious,\u201d Lopez says of the woman who raised him. And one time, when he was introducing her to the writer of his \u201cWhy You Crying\u201d book, she randomly told him, \u201cI don\u2019t think the guy that\u2019s your dad is your dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These formative experiences shaped much of his comedy, which often draws on his struggles with identity, and the challenges of growing up in a dysfunctional family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1993, Lopez started building his own family with Ann Serrano, an actor-producer who gave the comedian his only daughter, Mayan, in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also gave him one of her kidneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 2004, doctors told Lopez, then 43, that he needed a transplant to correct a condition that caused his kidneys to deteriorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKidney disease is not painful; I mean it is painful because it shows up in fatigue. So, you\u2019re always tired. It misled me to think that I was tired because I was working so hard when really my kidneys were shutting down,\u201d the star told Piers Morgan in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLatinos, we only go to the doctor when we are bleeding. We forget about things internal. Fatigue is just fatigue,\u201d he adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to WebMD, Lopez\u2019 kidneys had been \u201cpoisoned over the years from a congenital abnormality that caused a narrowing of his ureters, the tubes through which urine travels from each kidney to the bladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And without hesitating, his loving wife said, \u201cI\u2019ll give you one of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dThere was no question. When you are put in that position where you could possibly lose someone you love, it\u2019s a very easy decision,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In April 2005, Lopez and his wife arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and both quickly recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his biography, \u201cGeorge Lopez: Latino King of Comedy,\u201d he writes \u201cI think it was a miracle that my wife\u2019s kidney could be used. Now I value each day because I don\u2019t know how long this organ will hold out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The kidney lasted longer than his commitment to the woman who gave him the lifesaving gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before the procedure, Serrano, now 63, reveals that her husband had cheated on her and despite his lack of loyalty, she gave him another chance \u2013 along with a kidney \u2013 and warned him against doing it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy daughter was three and I definitely wanted her to have her father in her life,\u201d Serrano shares, adding that as her husband grew more famous, \u201che got a really big head.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then the tabloids offered the family some insight into Lopez\u2019 extra-curricular activities: \u201cIt was a pretty devastating way to find out,\u201d Serrano says. \u201cYour husband is leading a double life, basically. So, I just made the decision that that was just not something I could tolerate. And I decided to divorce him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking with Today, Mayan explains that after, she didn\u2019t speak with the Blue Beetle star for almost four years \u201cbecause it was just painful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHaving it be so public made it a whole other dynamic that makes it so much more difficult,\u201d said Mayan who grew up on The George Lopez Show. \u201cYou read these headlines and people sometimes forget that there\u2019s a family behind those headlines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The couple divorced in July 2011 and in a joint statement, they described the decision as mutual and amicable, emphasizing their ongoing commitment as parents and business partners of the Lopez Foundation, a charity that raises awareness on kidney disease and organ donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Today, Mayan, 28, and her dad get to hash out their real-life issues on t Lopez vs Lopez, a comedy TV series where real life meets fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMayan is the one relationship in my life that I need to save and the one I value more than anything. If NBC will allow us to deal with our personal issues on TV, God bless them,\u201d says Lopez, who plays a fictionalized version of himself, navigating life with his estranged daughter, Mayan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though sometimes the script can be \u201ca little too real,\u201d Mayan says the \u201cpain and authenticity\u201d that viewers see are genuine moments where daughter and dad are working out their issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The show, she says \u201cis really healing for me, personally\u2026And I think for my dad as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As for Lopez\u2019 relationship with Serrano, the two are still close friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a 2021 TikTok video shared by Mayan, fans see the former couple sitting in the hot seat, fielding questions from their daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWho screwed up your marriage more?\u201d Mayan asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After a bit of banter between the two, Serrano jokingly responds, \u201cYour dad didn\u2019t realize that you had to stop dating when you got married. You have to stop dating other people when you [get] married.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a separate\u00a0clip, Mayan asks if her parents still love each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYeah, I love you,\u201d Serrano tells Lopez. \u201cHe\u2019s the father of my child, he\u2019s my husband, and he\u2019s my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
