In April 2021, the dog was found in Tate County, Mississippi, suffering from severe burn injuries, primarily affecting his face, forehead, ears and part of his right front leg. An electrical extension cord was also found around his neck. The injuries were serious enough to require months of specialized veterinary treatment, but Buddy survived and eventually recovered far beyond what many might have expected during those first uncertain days.

According to Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Buddy was intentionally burned on April 22, 2021. Neighbors found him after the incident and called for assistance, beginning a chain of emergency veterinary care that would ultimately save his life. Buddy initially received treatment at veterinary facilities in northern Mississippi, where professionals worked to stabilize him, manage his pain and provide essential wound care. Four days later, on April 26, he was transferred to Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for advanced treatment.

Buddy’s condition was serious when he arrived, although veterinarians reported that he was otherwise physically stable. His burns ranged from second degree to much more severe injuries in certain areas, and his swollen eyes initially made his long-term prognosis particularly concerning. Despite everything he had experienced, members of his veterinary team remembered Buddy remaining affectionate toward the people caring for him. He ate, wagged his tail and responded positively to members of the medical team even while undergoing intensive treatment.

Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Swanson, an associate professor and small-animal surgeon at Mississippi State, became Buddy’s primary veterinarian. During the earliest stage of his treatment, Swanson emphasized that recovery from serious burns would be a long process rather than something that could be resolved through a single procedure. Veterinarians needed to manage his pain, prevent infection and repeatedly evaluate damaged tissue as the true extent of his injuries became clearer.

One of the first major components of Buddy’s treatment involved debridement, a medical process used to remove damaged tissue from wounds. According to MSU’s later account of his recovery, Buddy underwent his first procedure on the same day he was injured, followed by repeated treatment during the following days. His overall recovery eventually involved more than 10 surgical procedures, along with extensive wound care, medication, bandage changes and monitoring.

Infection was a major concern.

Severe burns damage the body’s natural protective barrier, making careful wound management especially important. Buddy received round-the-clock attention while hospitalized, and his medical team also worked to ensure that he remained appropriately nourished and hydrated. His treatment required considerable cooperation among veterinarians, veterinary students and specialists working in different areas of the university’s veterinary hospital.

One of the most notable treatments involved fish-skin grafts.

Veterinarians used a medical product derived from North Atlantic cod skin to assist the healing process. The material had been processed so that it could serve as a matrix over the damaged areas, allowing Buddy’s own tissue to grow into the treated region. According to Mississippi State, the manufacturer donated the graft material used during his treatment.

Buddy ultimately received multiple layers of the fish-skin material on his face.

Dr. Swanson later explained that the treatment was associated with a significant reduction in his pain after the first graft was applied. During the earliest phase of his hospitalization, Buddy sometimes required anesthesia for bandage changes because his wounds were so painful. As healing progressed, his medical team was gradually able to adjust the way those procedures were performed.

His eyes were another major concern.

Buddy’s facial injuries had affected the tissue around his eyes, including his eyelids and structures involved in keeping the eyes properly lubricated. Yet veterinarians discovered something extremely encouraging: Buddy’s eyes themselves had survived the attack. The protective way he apparently closed them during the incident may have helped preserve his vision, although surrounding tissue had sustained serious damage.

For months, protective bandages covered much of Buddy’s head.

The bandaging played an important role in his recovery, but it also meant that Buddy spent a prolonged period unable to use his vision normally. Veterinary students and staff therefore had to help him navigate his environment while simultaneously providing medical treatment and emotional enrichment.

Buddy learned to respond to voices and touch.

Members of his veterinary team spent considerable time helping him remain active and engaged while he healed. Walks, toys, basic training and ordinary human interaction became part of his recovery alongside surgeries and medication. Veterinary student Callie Ward later described working with Buddy on physical activities and enrichment while caring for him during her clinical training.

The emotional side of his care was important because his hospital stay was unusually long.

Buddy was not simply undergoing a procedure and returning home several days later. Serious burn treatment required repeated interventions over many months. Maintaining his quality of life during that period meant giving him opportunities to walk, play, learn and interact with the people around him whenever his medical condition allowed it.

His progress gradually became visible.

The wounds began closing, and skin started growing over areas that had initially suffered extensive damage. Hair eventually returned in some places as well. The success of his grafts and wound treatment allowed veterinarians to reduce the amount of bandaging required as his recovery advanced.

One especially important milestone came when Buddy was finally able to use his vision again after months of protective treatment.

The moment demonstrated that the devastating injuries surrounding his face had not taken away his ability to see. As his restrictions decreased, caregivers also noticed more of his playful personality returning. The dog who had endured months of medical procedures became increasingly interested in exploring, interacting and playing.

Tennis balls and other toys became particular favorites.

Images released during his recovery showed a dramatically different Buddy from the severely injured dog who had entered veterinary care months earlier. He could walk, play and interact with the people who had spent so much time treating him.

His recovery, however, still required additional medical work.

Because his eyelids had been damaged, reconstructive procedures were needed to help protect his eyes properly. MSU reported in September 2021 that Buddy was healing well following the codfish-skin grafts but would continue receiving treatment, including eyelid reconstruction and heartworm treatment.

The long duration of Buddy’s hospitalization illustrates the complexity of treating severe burns.

According to Mississippi State’s veterinary publication, his care involved faculty members, residents, students and specialists in areas including surgery, anesthesia, intensive care, ophthalmology and radiology. The medical costs exceeded $40,000 and were covered by the Tunica County Humane Society with help from donations.

Throughout that process, Buddy became well known far beyond the veterinary hospital.

His story attracted widespread public attention as updates documented each stage of his recovery. People followed his progress from the initial uncertainty through skin grafts, bandage changes and eventually the return of his vision and playful behavior.

Yet Buddy still had a considerable journey ahead.

The severity of his injuries meant his new skin required protection, particularly from sunlight. Dr. Swanson explained that he would need sun protection and could require artificial tears to keep his eyes adequately lubricated. These precautions became part of adapting to life after his injuries rather than evidence that his recovery had failed.

By early 2022, another major milestone arrived.

After approximately 10 months of hospital treatment and recovery, Buddy was finally released from Mississippi State’s veterinary hospital. The dog who had arrived with severe burns was able to leave the intensive medical environment that had been his home for much of the previous year.

And his connection with the veterinary team did not end there.

Dr. Betsy Swanson, who had overseen much of Buddy’s treatment, initially took him into her home as a foster dog. Eventually, that arrangement became permanent: Swanson adopted Buddy.

The veterinarian who had helped guide him through surgeries, wound care and months of recovery became his owner.

Later updates provided an even happier picture.

By 2023, Mississippi State’s College of Veterinary Medicine reported that Buddy was healthy and happy. Swanson said he enjoyed meeting people and going for long walks. His damaged skin still required sunscreen when he spent time outdoors, but those precautions had become part of an otherwise active life.

Buddy also remained enthusiastic about ordinary dog pleasures.

Food, toys, walks and attention replaced the hospital procedures that had dominated so much of his earlier life. After months when his world consisted largely of bandages, medication and veterinary treatment, he was finally able to live primarily as a companion animal.

His recovery also received broader recognition.

Buddy was selected for induction into the Animal Heroes Hall of Fame, which recognizes animals that have overcome significant adversity or positively affected their communities. His veterinary team viewed the recognition as a reflection not only of what he survived but also of the affectionate temperament he maintained throughout his treatment.

The case had consequences beyond Buddy’s individual recovery as well.

Mississippi subsequently enacted legislation commonly known as “Buddy’s Law.” The measure was associated with addressing situations involving juveniles who commit acts of animal cruelty, including requirements concerning psychological evaluation in applicable cases.

It is important, however, to describe Buddy’s case carefully.

Public accounts identify a juvenile in connection with the incident, and Mississippi State’s later material describes Buddy as having been burned by a juvenile. Because the person involved was a child, responsible coverage should avoid unnecessary identifying speculation or sensational treatment of the juvenile.

The focus can remain where the documented story is strongest: on Buddy and his recovery.

What happened to him was severe enough to require more than 10 operations, extensive pain management, repeated bandage changes, specialized grafts and approximately 10 months of veterinary treatment. His survival was not the result of a single dramatic procedure.

It was a gradual medical process.

Veterinarians had to remove damaged tissue, control pain, prevent infection, protect his eyes, maintain nutrition and repeatedly reconstruct injured areas. Students and caregivers also spent countless hours walking him, comforting him and providing enrichment while his body healed.

Each improvement built upon the previous one.

First came stabilization. Then wound treatment and grafting. Later came reduced bandaging, greater mobility and the confirmation that his vision remained functional. Eventually came reconstructive work, discharge from the hospital and a permanent home.

That progression makes Buddy’s recovery remarkable without requiring exaggeration.

His story also demonstrates the capabilities of modern veterinary medicine. A combination of specialized surgery, intensive nursing care, innovative wound-management techniques and long-term rehabilitation gave a severely injured dog an opportunity to recover meaningful quality of life.

Just as importantly, Buddy had people willing to remain committed throughout that process.

The Tunica Humane Society helped coordinate and fund his care. Veterinary professionals and students at Mississippi State handled the complicated medical work. Donors contributed to expenses, while people following his story offered support from around the country.

Years after the 2021 incident, the most meaningful update is not another photograph of bandages or another surgical procedure.

It is that Buddy survived.

He recovered sufficiently to leave the hospital, found a permanent home with the veterinarian who knew his medical needs intimately and returned to doing the ordinary things dogs enjoy.

He still requires some protection because of the lasting effects of his injuries, including careful attention to sun exposure. Those needs are part of his life, but they do not define everything about it.

Buddy’s documented journey therefore stretches far beyond the terrible circumstances in which he was found.

It includes the emergency veterinarians who stabilized him, the Mississippi State specialists who performed his procedures, the students who cared for him day after day and the humane-society supporters who helped make prolonged treatment possible.

Most of all, it includes the dog himself.

Despite severe injuries and months of demanding medical care, Buddy remained engaged with the people around him and gradually returned to an active life.

His story began with cruelty in April 2021.

But that is not where it ended.

After more than 10 surgeries, specialized skin grafts, reconstructive treatment and approximately 10 months of recovery, Buddy eventually left the veterinary hospital and entered a permanent home.

By 2023, his veterinarian and owner could report something far more important than another medical milestone: Buddy was healthy, happy and enjoying life.

That remains the most meaningful final chapter of his remarkable recovery.

Buddy’s story began with an act of cruelty that left a young Labrador retriever mix facing an extraordinarily difficult recovery.
