Tretow, the legendary Swedish sound engineer and producer who played a major role in creating ABBA’s unmistakable sound.

Tretow died on May 20, 2025, at the age of 80. Following his passing, all four members of ABBA shared heartfelt tributes honoring the man who helped shape some of the group’s most iconic recordings.

Often described as ABBA’s “fifth member,” Tretow worked closely with the band during its most successful years, from the 1970s through the early 1980s.

Born in Norrköping, Sweden, in 1944, Tretow developed a fascination with recording technology as a teenager. He experimented with sound using basic equipment before beginning his professional career at Metronome Studio in Stockholm in 1967.

It was there that he met Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, beginning a creative partnership that would become an important part of ABBA’s history.

Tretow was known for his innovative studio techniques. He experimented with effects such as tape delay and vocal doubling, helping give ABBA’s recordings their rich, layered and polished sound.

His attention to detail and willingness to experiment became an important part of the group’s musical identity.

But Tretow’s career extended beyond ABBA. He also worked on the musical Chess and collaborated with Swedish artists including Ted Gärdestad and Lena Andersson.

He even released quirky solo projects, including Let’s Boogie in 1976 and Hystereo Hi-lites in 1989.

In 2001, Tretow suffered a stroke and gradually stepped away from the music industry.

Although he worked behind the scenes rather than in the spotlight, his influence on one of the world’s most successful pop groups was enormous.

Michael B. Tretow leaves behind a lasting musical legacy—and countless recordings that helped define an era.

He is survived by his son, Rasmus Tretow, and his wife, Malin Hertzman.

Rest in peace, Michael B.
