Despite doctors\u2019 efforts, the infection caused devastating damage to her brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the case as the state\u2019s first known <em>Naegleria fowleri<\/em> infection since 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amoeba is naturally found in warm freshwater and can enter the body through the nose. Although infections are extremely rare, they are almost always fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those who knew Lillian want her remembered not for the illness that took her life, but for the bright, loving child she was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends and community members described her as a happy little girl who always seemed to have a smile on her face.
