I told Leo how much he loved music, how he hated thunder, and how he always noticed when someone was lonely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I showed him photographs and an old newspaper clipping about Michael volunteering at a community center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe didn’t care about being important,\u201d I told Leo. \u201cHe cared about making people feel welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leo stared at the pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I could have taken his phone away and grounded him for a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But I knew that might only teach him how to avoid getting caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI want you to learn something else,\u201d I said. \u201cHow to notice another person’s dignity before you decide whether something is funny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next day, Leo returned to the restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sam was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leo stood in front of him, nervous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI owe you an apology,\u201d he said. \u201cI made fun of the way you talked and moved. It was disrespectful, and I knew it while I was doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sam listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he simply said, \u201cThank you for saying that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn’t a dramatic moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
