I had saved for months to send my 13-year-old daughter, Mia, to the summer camp she’d dreamed about for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three weeks later, I drove three hours to pick her up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She ran toward my car, smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the camp director approached me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She told her Grandma had started making my meals because I was getting home so late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then she whispered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMom hasn’t even bought new shoes since spring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n My heart broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I took her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cDid you have fun?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA lot?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThen that’s what the camp was for,\u201d I told her. \u201cI worked for it.
