The following season, he exploded for <strong>19.5 sacks<\/strong>, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors while helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At just 23 years old, he appeared to be on a path toward becoming one of the NFL\u2019s greatest pass rushers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his career was repeatedly interrupted by serious off-field struggles, legal issues and substance-abuse problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After leaving San Francisco, Smith had stints with the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
