\u201cIf He Couldn\u2019t Have Holly, Nobody Could\u201d: Jealous Ex Followed 15-Year-Old for 45 Minutes Before Stabbing Her 36 Times<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holly Newton was only 15 years old when a relationship she had tried to end turned into a devastating tragedy that shocked Hexham and later raised difficult questions about teenage domestic abuse across the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her former boyfriend, Logan MacPhail, was 16 at the time, and prosecutors said he simply could not accept that Holly no longer wanted to be with him after their relationship of around 18 months had ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holly\u2019s mother later said MacPhail had become increasingly controlling, wanting to know where Holly was, interfering with her friendships and gaining access to her social-media accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also said Holly had told her that MacPhail had expressed the disturbing idea that if he could not have her, nobody else could, a warning that became horrifyingly significant after her death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The night before Holly was killed, MacPhail travelled more than 40 miles from Gateshead to the area around her home in Haltwhistle and remained nearby for hours while trying to find a way to speak to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He contacted people close to Holly and even asked for help getting access to the house, but police eventually located him and returned him home during the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holly\u2019s mother had become so concerned about his behaviour that she arranged to speak with police on January 27, 2023, about what had been happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meeting was later moved to that evening so Holly could spend some time with her friends after school, something no one could have known would become one of the final decisions of her young life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead of staying away, MacPhail left school early that day and travelled to Hexham carrying a kitchen knife concealed on his body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CCTV cameras then captured him secretly following Holly and her friends through the town centre for around 45 minutes while they remained unaware that he was tracking their movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Investigators said he repeatedly stopped, hid and made fake phone calls while keeping Holly in sight, behaviour that later became crucial evidence showing how deliberately he had followed her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, MacPhail approached Holly near a takeaway and persuaded her to speak with him in a nearby alleyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happened there lasted only a short time, but it destroyed Holly\u2019s future and permanently changed the lives of everyone who loved her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MacPhail launched a ferocious knife attack on Holly, stabbing her repeatedly in approximately one minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reports from the sentencing proceedings said Holly suffered 36 stab wounds, while Northumbria Police described her as having sustained 36 injuries during the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A teenage boy who heard Holly in distress ran to help her and attempted to pull MacPhail away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MacPhail then attacked the boy as well, stabbing him before turning his attention back toward Holly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Members of the public eventually intervened, and MacPhail was detained nearby before police arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency crews desperately tried to save Holly, but the 15-year-old died from her injuries, leaving her family confronting the unimaginable reality that their daughter would never return home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prosecutors later said the evidence showed MacPhail killed Holly because he could not accept that their relationship was over and was consumed by jealousy at the possibility that she might move on with somebody else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MacPhail admitted causing Holly\u2019s death but denied murder, arguing that he had effectively lost control of his memory and had intended only to harm himself with the knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The jury rejected that account after a six-week trial and found him guilty of murder as well as grievous bodily harm with intent against the boy who had tried to rescue Holly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On November 1, 2024, Newcastle Crown Court sentenced MacPhail to detention for life, with a minimum term of 17 years before he can even be considered for release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also received a concurrent five-year sentence for seriously injuring Holly\u2019s friend during the attempted rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But for Holly\u2019s mother, Micala Trussler, the conviction became about something larger than the punishment of the person who killed her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because Holly was only 15, her experience did not fall within the legal definition of domestic abuse that requires the people involved to be at least 16, despite the controlling and obsessive behaviour her family believed she had endured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her mother has since campaigned for what has become known as \u201cHolly\u2019s Law,\u201d seeking greater legal recognition and protection for children under 16 who experience abuse within teenage relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As recently as March 2026, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the government would continue examining what more could be done as concerns grow about abusive behaviour occurring at increasingly younger ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Holly should have had years ahead of her to finish school, follow her love of sport and dancing, spend time with friends and discover the person she wanted to become.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, her life ended because a formerboy friend refused to accept a decision she had every right to make \u2014 the decision to leave a relationship that she no longer wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her family now hopes that Holly\u2019s story can help other teenagers recognise that jealousy, constant monitoring, unwanted contact, emotional threats and attempts to isolate someone from friends are not signs of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
