She makes things up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But May continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cShe bites her ring when she takes Daddy\u2019s phone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire patio went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat phone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May explained that Vanessa had been coming to our house while I was away\u2014and that she had seen her sitting on our couch with Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then May said something even worse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cShe says, \u2018Don\u2019t worry, he\u2019ll never know.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniel went completely pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard stared at his wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat work papers did you see, sweetheart?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">May pointed toward Daniel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe blue folder Daddy said was important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard&#8217;s expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That folder contained confidential documents from a major merger\u2014documents he had spent months trying to find after they mysteriously disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly, the birthday party was over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard told Vanessa and Daniel they would be meeting his lawyers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I finally realized that what I thought was just an affair was connected to something much bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Six months later, my daughter and I were living in a small apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One night, she asked me if she had done something wrong by telling the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hugged her and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou did the bravest thing any of us did that night.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I brought my husband and our four-year-old daughter, May, to his boss\u2019s lavish birthday party.
