Two years ago, my 10-year-old daughter Mia survived a terrible car accident and woke up unable to feel her legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For months, she hated her wheelchair and called herself \u201cthe broken girl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My sister Claire, however, always made sure Mia felt included. So when Claire got married, she promised Mia she would catch the bridal bouquet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mia\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before I could confront Donna, Mia asked for the microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her hands were shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter my accident, I thought nobody would love me because I couldn\u2019t walk,\u201d she said. \u201cBut Mom taught me people don\u2019t leave someone just because they can\u2019t walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she looked directly at Donna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSometimes people leave because they don\u2019t like how that person treats them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The room erupted in applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Mia added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo maybe you don\u2019t need my bouquet. Maybe you need to ask why all your boyfriends keep leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Everyone gasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donna turned red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then Mia said something that stopped me cold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI know more than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had no idea what she meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Later, I asked her how she knew Donna\u2019s relationships had ended badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mia finally revealed that she had overheard Donna talking to her former boyfriend Eric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He had said, \u201cStop telling everyone I cheated. You know why I left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I immediately called Eric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He confirmed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He hadn\u2019t cheated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donna had lied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had also told our family that Eric left her with thousands of dollars in debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that wasn’t true either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I checked my bank account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
