For almost a year, my seven-year-old daughter Alice had measured life in chemotherapy, blood tests, and hospital visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On her birthday, I wanted to give her one day that felt normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alice loved superheroes, so I decorated her hospital room with stars, brought a cake, and placed Spider-Man beside her IV pole as her \u201cchemo buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Superman walked through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Behind him came Wonder Woman, Batman, Spider-Man, and Captain America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alice stared in disbelief before bursting into laughter\u2014and then tears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They were her doctors and nurses, dressed as the superheroes she loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But then Dr. Malcolm knelt beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere’s one part of today your mom doesn’t know about either.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My heart dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He told us the latest results were encouraging. Alice wasn’t finished with treatment, but she was ready to move into a less intensive phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he handed her a blue backpack covered in stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside was a note from her classmates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhenever you’re ready, your seat is waiting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Alice looked at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSchool?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n For the first time in months, she had something to look forward to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But I wasn’t ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I’d spent so long protecting her that I had forgotten she wanted her life back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When a parent at school questioned whether Alice was \u201csafe\u201d around other children, I panicked and considered keeping her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Alice overheard me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEverybody’s going to look at me differently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later, her friend Sophie came over. Alice discovered Sophie hadn’t signed her birthday card because she didn’t know how to talk about cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Within minutes, the girls were arguing about dinosaurs like nothing had changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That night, I found Alice’s notebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n At the top she’d written:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThings I want to do when Mom stops being scared.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ride the bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Go to recess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sleep at Grandma’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Eat cake without Mom asking if her stomach hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Stop people whispering when they think she’s asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMake Mom laugh without checking if she really means it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I sat on the floor and cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I’d spent a year watching Alice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I hadn’t realized she was watching me too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, I asked what she wanted her first day back at school to look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cA half day,\u201d she said. \u201cNo big welcome.
