Diane immediately tried to deny it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So I showed him the live footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I showed him Laura’s video of Diane entering our house while we were gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ryan’s face changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Mom, why would you do this?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diane finally admitted she’d been doing it for months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I was trying to show you what she’s really like.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then came the real reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Because you always defend her.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She revealed that Ryan’s old high school girlfriend, Claire, had recently moved back to town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Diane, Claire was more organized, professional, and “had her life together.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ryan stared at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You’re trying to get me to leave my wife for someone I dated when I was seventeen?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diane insisted she was only trying to help him see the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You’ve been breaking into our house and planting messes because Claire moved back?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I had a key.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“That doesn’t make it better.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He demanded the key and told her she was no longer allowed into our home unless one of us invited her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After she left, Ryan apologized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He admitted that he’d started believing his mother’s accusations and that he’d mistaken her constant criticism for concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That hurt more than the messes themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For months, I’d been trying to pass a test Diane had already decided I would fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, Diane was allowed back for coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This time, I didn’t deep-clean the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were two cups in the sink, a sweater on the couch, and crumbs beneath the toaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
