Every weekend, my mother welcomed my husband\u2019s family to her lake house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She cooked breakfast, cleaned, changed beds, drove to the store, and prepared dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My mother-in-law, Susan, did almost nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She would sit on the deck with her iced tea while Mom waited on everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The final straw came when Mom planted beautiful geraniums along the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Susan looked at them and said, \u201cThey\u2019re blocking my view. Move them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And my mother actually moved her own flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I said nothing that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, I woke up at 5 a.m. and made a chore board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Weekend Jobs:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Daniel \u2014 breakfast cleanup. At the bottom, I wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMom \u2014 Enjoy your house.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Susan came downstairs, saw the board, and laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAre you serious?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n When she complained that guests shouldn\u2019t have chores, my husband surprised me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Susan admitted she had once watched her own family take over everything for her aging mother, believing they were helping\u2014only to make her feel useless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That made me realize something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My mom wasn’t serving everyone because she couldn’t say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She was trying desperately to make her new extended family love coming to her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She wanted to feel needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mom finally spoke up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI like taking care of people. I don’t like being taken for granted. Those aren’t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n The room went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That weekend, Susan cooked dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It wasn’t perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But she carried the dishes herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next morning, her coffee cup went straight into the sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before leaving, she apologized to Mom for the flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then she looked at the geraniums blocking her view of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She didn’t ask anyone to move them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She simply chose another chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The flowers stayed exactly where Mom planted them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I learned something too:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes defending someone doesn’t mean fighting their battles.
