A Catholic priest in Ecuador has died after a large crucifix fell from a church wall and struck him while he was celebrating Mass. The tragic incident occurred in front of worshippers, and the service was being livestreamed when the accident happened.

Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez was leading an evening service at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil on October 17 when the heavy cross suddenly came loose from its position above him.

As the crucifix crashed down, members of the congregation rushed forward to help the priest. Emergency services were called, but Sánchez sadly died from his injuries.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed Sánchez’s death, remembering him as the parish priest of Perpetuo Socorro Church and a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.

In the moments before the accident, Sánchez had been speaking to the congregation about the temporary nature of life and the certainty that everyone will eventually face death.

“One day, all of us here will also die,” he told those gathered.

He encouraged people to reflect on how they use the time available to them, emphasizing the importance of their relationship with God and the time they share with family members and loved ones.

Sánchez spoke about the value of being present for spouses, children, relatives and others in their lives, reminding the congregation that these moments are precious.

He then asked God to bless those attending the service. Only moments later, the accident occurred.

As of Monday, the exact reason the crucifix detached from the church wall had not been publicly established. Church officials had not released a detailed explanation of what caused the heavy structure to fall.

The timing of the tragedy has left a deep impression on those who witnessed it, particularly because Sánchez had been discussing death and the importance of making the most of life shortly before the accident.

However, members of the Catholic community have urged people not to speculate about the meaning of the incident or describe it as a punishment. They have instead encouraged prayer, compassion and respect for those mourning his loss.

For many, remembering Father Sánchez means focusing on the message he shared with his congregation rather than trying to find an explanation for the tragedy.

His words served as a reminder that life can change unexpectedly and that time spent with loved ones should never be taken for granted.

The priest’s final message has now become an especially poignant part of his legacy, encouraging those who heard it to appreciate their families, strengthen their relationships and make meaningful use of the time they have.
