For several seconds, I couldn\u2019t speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I told him how proud I was of him for taking that step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He cleared his throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDon\u2019t get too sentimental, Sandy. I\u2019m still pretty terrible at it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned toward him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI should have told you I was taking vacation days to help someone who needed privacy. That would have been enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI was worried you\u2019d ask more questions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI probably would have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He glanced at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut you could have told me you weren\u2019t able to answer them,\u201d I continued. \u201cI don\u2019t need to know every private thing someone shares with you. I just need you to be honest about decisions that affect our marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd I owe you an apology, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He looked surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFor following you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was quiet for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI understand why you did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMaybe. But that doesn\u2019t mean I should have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We drove the rest of the way home without arguing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Things weren\u2019t magically perfect between us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We had both crossed boundaries that week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But at least we finally understood what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The next morning, Eliam picked up his laptop and car keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a moment, everything looked exactly as it had before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The same morning routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
