In 1982, a tropical storm overturned the yacht she was aboard, leaving her and four others stranded in an inflatable life raft surrounded by sharks.

What followed was five terrifying days marked by dehydration, injuries, exhaustion and devastating loss. Deborah survived alongside fellow sailor Brad, but three of their companions died before help finally arrived.

Years later, her account of the ordeal revealed how desperation and dangerous decisions compounded an already life-threatening situation.

A Sailing Adventure Turns Into a Nightmare

Deborah was traveling aboard a yacht named Trashman with its captain, John Lippoth, his girlfriend, Meg Mooney, and two other men, Brad and Mark Adams. Their task was to deliver the vessel to its new owner on a journey from Maine toward Florida.

Just two days into the trip, a tropical storm capsized the yacht, forcing all five people to abandon the vessel and climb into an inflatable life raft.

Escaping the sinking boat was only the beginning of their ordeal. Sharks soon appeared around the small raft, and some reportedly rammed into it as the survivors struggled to stay safe.

Deborah later recalled the frightening moment the group realized how close the predators were.

“The minute we got in there were fins surrounding the dinghy,” she said while recounting the experience on the television program I Shouldn’t Be Alive.

“They were everywhere.”

The situation became even more precarious when Meg injured her leg. The wound began bleeding, adding another concern as the group faced the dangers of the open ocean.

With no reliable supply of fresh water, dehydration gradually weakened the survivors. As exhaustion and thirst intensified, their ability to think clearly began to deteriorate.

The Fatal Decision to Drink Seawater

As the days passed, John and Mark reportedly became increasingly delirious. Both men made the dangerous decision to drink seawater in an attempt to cope with their thirst.

Seawater contains too much salt for the human body to safely use as a source of hydration. Drinking it can worsen dehydration, making an already desperate situation more dangerous.

John’s condition deteriorated, and he began hallucinating. Eventually, he jumped out of the raft, apparently believing that land was nearby.

Deborah later recalled hearing a terrifying scream before the ocean fell silent.

She believed sharks had attacked him, and John did not return to the raft.

Mark subsequently left the raft as well. According to Deborah’s account, he was also suffering from delusions and believed he was heading toward a nearby store to buy beer and cigarettes.

He, too, died after entering the water.

The deaths left the remaining survivors facing an even more desperate situation. The sharks surrounding the raft were an immediate threat to anyone who entered the ocean, while thirst and exhaustion continued to take their toll.

Meg’s Condition Took a Devastating Turn

While John and Mark died after leaving the raft, Meg remained aboard. However, her injured leg continued to worsen, and the wound became infected.

Despite the group’s efforts to endure the ordeal, Meg eventually died.

Deborah later described the painful decision the survivors faced after losing her companion. They wanted to treat her body with dignity rather than simply push it into the water without a moment of remembrance.

The group said the Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23 before gently placing her body in the ocean.

Deborah recalled that they then tried to rest, hoping not to witness what might happen when the sharks reached the body.

It was another devastating loss in an ordeal that had already pushed the survivors to their physical and emotional limits.

Rescue Finally Arrived

After days adrift, only Deborah and Brad remained alive.

Both had endured intense thirst, fear, exhaustion and the psychological strain of watching their companions die. With no certainty that anyone would find them, they continued waiting for help.

Then a cargo ship appeared.

The two survivors were rescued, bringing an end to five days of uncertainty and danger.

Deborah later described her overwhelming relief, saying that she did not care who the rescuers were or where they were taking her. What mattered was that she and Brad were alive.

Their rescue offered a way out of the immediate danger, but it did not erase the memories of what had happened.

The Lasting Psychological Impact

In the years following the disaster, Deborah became a motivational speaker and wrote a book about her experience.

Brad continued working at sea, but he later described how difficult it was to leave the psychological effects of the ordeal behind.

He explained that surviving such an experience can leave a person feeling as though they remain in survival mode long after the immediate danger has passed.

For both survivors, making it home was only one part of the journey. They also had to live with the memories of the three people who died beside them.

Could the Other Three Have Survived?

Deborah’s story has often been presented as a lesson in survival, particularly because two of the men entered the water while suffering from severe thirst and confusion.

Remaining inside the raft would have kept them away from the immediate danger posed by the sharks. Drinking seawater, meanwhile, can worsen dehydration and impair a person’s condition further.

However, it is impossible to know whether different decisions would have saved every member of the group. The survivors faced multiple threats, including a dangerous ocean, inadequate supplies, injuries and the effects of prolonged dehydration.

What is clear is that the ordeal left a lasting mark on those who survived.

For Deborah, the five days adrift became an experience she would spend years recounting. Her story is a sobering reminder of how quickly a routine voyage can become a fight for life, and how critical it can be to avoid decisions that further endanger people in an already desperate situation.

Deborah Scaling-Kiley was just 24 years old when a sailing trip across the Atlantic turned into a fight for survival.
