My 19-year-old son, Weston, died saving a seven-year-old girl from a river. For 18 years, I believed he’d simply been a stranger who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

Then the girl, Sloane, appeared at my door holding an old green book.

“Your son wasn’t at that river by accident,” she whispered. “He came to meet me.”

Weston had volunteered at a children’s reading program and promised to help Sloane finish her favorite book before leaving for college. She’d gone to the riverside park hoping to see him, but slipped into the water. Weston jumped in to save her and never came back.

Inside the book, I found his handwriting: “For Sloane. Save the last page for me.”

Sloane had carried it to his funeral but couldn’t bring herself to explain their connection. For years, she’d felt guilty for surviving while he died.

I took her hands and told her Weston hadn’t saved her expecting anything in return. He’d simply wanted her to live.

Now an adult, Sloane worked as a reading specialist, helping children who struggled with words—just as Weston had once helped her.

Weeks later, she returned with her little boy, Charlie. As he struggled to read a difficult word from Weston’s old book, Sloane waited patiently.

Finally, Charlie got it right.

Then he looked at me and asked, “Next page, Grandma Demi?”

I smiled and turned the page. For the first time in 18 years, remembering my son brought me something besides grief.
