Their five-day field trip involved School of the Wild, a University of Iowa program that brought lessons into the natural world.

According to The Times, the recreation area covered 485 acres of woodland and floodplains, providing habitat for rare species. The university leased the land from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Children taking part in the program could walk through fields, meet animals, and go kayaking while learning about their surroundings. Native birds and trails beneath tall trees helped make the park an inviting outdoor classroom.

Borlaug belonged to the Iowa City Community School District, the second-largest school district in Iowa, a little more than 100 miles east of Des Moines. For the children attending the program, there was plenty to discover beyond their usual desks.

On that Tuesday, Hannah led 14 students on a woodland hike. Their route ended beside the Coralville Reservoir, south of the Lake Macbride Spillway, where the group stopped for a lunch break included in the curriculum.

They were together beside the shoreline when Ahmed fell into the water. The earliest public accounts left many questions unanswered about those crucial minutes.

His father said Hannah tried to save him, but the authorities had not yet released the sequence that explained how the emergency unfolded. What became clear that afternoon was that a teacher and a child needed help, and rescuers were racing to reach them.

Rescuers Found Hannah, but Ahmed Was Still Missing

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received the emergency report at 12:10 p.m. local time. According to Fox News, responders recovered Hannah from the water at 12:43 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hannah, who lived in Tiffin, was just 24. While her loved ones faced that terrible news, Ahmed’s family remained caught in the anguish of a search that had not yet brought their little boy home.

Crews continued looking for him through the afternoon. When the search paused overnight, he was still missing. His father, Mohamed Osman, 59, did not face those hours alone. Dozens of Sudanese immigrants gathered near the park to support the family while authorities searched.

Recovery efforts resumed on Wednesday, September 23. In an earlier announcement, the sheriff’s office confirmed that Ahmed was recovered at 1:24 p.m. He, too, was pronounced dead at the scene.

For the families and the school community, the wait had ended with the loss of both people they had desperately wanted rescuers to save. The university subsequently placed School of the Wild on hiatus.

The question of precisely what happened beside the reservoir remained. But an October update finally explained the actions Hannah took, including how she continued guiding the children after she entered the water.

Hannah Still Had Instructions for Her Class

In findings released on Friday, October 23, and covered by People on October 26, investigators described how the lunch break became an emergency. Ahmed stepped into water flowing down the spillway. He slipped on the rocks and fell into the reservoir.

Hannah immediately jumped in after him. She left her phone on the shore before entering the water. Then, while she was already in the reservoir, she gave the students an urgent instruction.

One student picked up her phone and made the call. Other children alerted a bystander across the spillway. Those young students had suddenly been confronted with something frightening beyond anything a school outing should bring. Their teacher gave them a concrete action to take, and they followed through.

It was an extraordinary act of care under terrible circumstances. The bystander also entered the water in an attempt to rescue Hannah and Ahmed. He could not reach a successful rescue, but he managed to return safely to shore.

He then stayed with the children until first responders arrived. That kindness deserved recognition, too. Later, school staff escorted the remaining 13 children back to Borlaug. Investigators interviewed them all, along with the bystander, as they worked to establish what happened.

The response drew assistance from the Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Johnson County Emergency Management and the county’s ambulance service. Fire departments from Solon, North Liberty, Swisher, Lisbon and Mt. Vernon also helped.

Other responding agencies included the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center, University of Iowa Police Department, North Liberty Police Department, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State Patrol.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, UI Air Care, UI MED ONE, the Johnson County Medical Examiner and the Story County Sheriff’s Office supported the operation as well.

The sheriff’s office said the incident remained under investigation, with no further information available for release. Its findings nevertheless confirmed the courage behind the tributes already being paid to Hannah.

Her Former Teacher Recognized the Bravery She Had Always Known

Before Hannah became a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug, she spent several school years working as a paraeducator at Garner Elementary. She also completed her practicum and student teaching there.

Her career had taken her into more than one school in the district, giving colleagues and children the chance to know her patient manner.

Garner remembered an educator whose quiet presence came with a deep willingness to help. In its social media tribute, the school wrote, “Hannah’s calm presence, willingness to go above and beyond, and love for all students made Hannah an amazing person and educator.“

Those were qualities her own former teacher, Jessie Frerich, recognized immediately. Some pupils stayed with a teacher long after they left the classroom, Jessie explained in her remembrance. Hannah was one of hers. “She was a real treasure; kind, sweet and loving,” she wrote.

Jessie had also heard that Hannah tried to save a student. Her response captured the painful familiarity of that bravery to someone who had known her long before this field trip.

Her family had memories from even earlier, when she was the little girl being taken on outings herself.

A Little Girl Who Loved a Helicopter Ride

Hannah’s stepmother, Dayna Parker, met her when she was about 10 years old, the same age Ahmed was when he died. One memory took Dayna back to a demolition derby in Tiffin. Hannah became determined to take a helicopter ride, and the experience delighted her.

Afterward, she wore a huge smile and kept talking about it. Dayna also remembered Hannah’s modesty. In family conversations, relatives sometimes needed to gently encourage her to say a little more. Her farewell ended with the promise, “I Love You and ALWAYS will.“

She also asked others to carry Hannah’s goodness into their own lives: “Be a Hannah.“

Emily Riggan had known Hannah since she was 8. In her own tribute, Emily remembered watching her grow up and spoke of Hannah’s close relationship with her sister, Carly. She asked people to pray for both families.

Ahmed Dreamed of a White Coat or a Soccer Field

Meanwhile, Ahmed lived in Iowa City with a family whose journey there began after immigrating from Sudan. They moved to the city in 2011, Mohamed said. The little boy had three siblings, a talent for mathematics and a love of soccer.

His hopes for adulthood were full of possibility. He dreamed of becoming a doctor or a soccer player. He had also spent time volunteering with his father to clean up a nearby lake and their community. “We didn’t believe he would leave us this soon,” Mohamed said.

At Borlaug, the school brought in counselors and extra support staff for students and employees. Children needed help processing the loss of a classmate and a teacher, while the adults supporting them were grieving, too.

In its message, the district expressed how deeply the deaths affected the community: “There are simply no words that can adequately express the depth of this loss.” The district also told People, “Our hearts are with their families and loved ones,” extending that care to colleagues, classmates, and everyone who knew them.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds addressed the grieving school community in a public message: “Our hearts are heavy with news of the tragedy at Lake Macbride.”

Kim offered condolences alongside her husband and asked Iowans to pray for the families’ comfort and healing. She also thanked the law enforcement officers and first responders who worked across those two difficult days.

Ahmed deserved the chance to grow into the future he imagined, and Hannah deserved many more years with the children she loved teaching. Her courage deserved to be remembered with that same love: a young teacher saw a child in danger, went to help him, and kept caring for her class from the water.

The information in this article is not intended or implied to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
