A Florida mother has been arrested after allegedly leaving her four children at home without an adult for several days while she travelled to Las Vegas for work. The situation came to light when one of the children called 911 after a younger sibling was injured.

Irene Miller, 50, from Kissimmee, reportedly flew to Las Vegas on October 18 and planned to remain there for five days. Her children, aged 14, 12, 11 and nine, stayed at home while she was away.

On October 23, shortly after 8:30 p.m., one of the children contacted emergency services to report that her nine-year-old brother had been hurt. According to investigators, the boy had been struck on the head by a falling dumbbell.

When emergency responders arrived, they found all four children at the property without an adult present. The injured boy was taken to Celebration Hospital, where he received treatment before being released.

After the incident, deputies contacted Miller by phone while she was still in Las Vegas.

According to Osceola County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Captain Kim Montes, Miller said she expected to return to Florida two days later. She reportedly disputed the suggestion that the children had been left entirely without supervision, explaining that a babysitter was supposed to visit from Tampa.

Montes said Miller told deputies that the babysitter came in the mornings to help the children get ready for school and returned after school to check on them. However, the arrangement did not require the babysitter to stay overnight.

Authorities also contacted the children’s father. He subsequently collected all four children and took them to his home.

When Miller’s flight arrived at Orlando International Airport, deputies were waiting for her.

Body camera footage reportedly shows officers approaching her, escorting her away and placing her in handcuffs. She was then booked into the Orange County Jail.

Miller faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.

Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the department takes allegations involving the safety and supervision of children seriously. He stated that cases of suspected neglect would be investigated and that charges could follow when parents fail to provide appropriate care and supervision.

Under Florida law, child neglect without great bodily harm is classified as a third-degree felony.

The charge can carry a potential sentence of up to five years in prison for each count. However, the maximum penalty does not mean that a defendant will necessarily receive that sentence.

Miller’s case follows an emergency call from one of her children and an investigation into the arrangements made while she was away. The allegations and charges will be addressed through the legal process.
