The aircraft struck the ground with tremendous force, triggering a huge fireball and leaving behind a smouldering crater.

Although nobody on the ground was reported killed, at least one mobile home was damaged. Around 600 residents were evacuated as emergency crews responded to the disaster.

Footage recorded after the crash quickly circulated online. Viewers noticed that the impact site appeared to contain a large crater but very little recognizable wreckage, prompting questions about what had happened to the aircraft.

An aviation expert has now offered a possible explanation.

Why Was There So Little Aircraft Wreckage?

Mary Schiavo, an aviation attorney, licensed pilot and former US government official, examined the available footage and questioned whether the aircraft was under control when it hit the ground.

Speaking to CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield, she said the impact did not appear consistent with a controlled descent.

Schiavo suggested that the aircraft had lost control before reaching the ground.

The final communications with air traffic control also reportedly indicated that the jet was experiencing an overspeed condition.

Reports described the aircraft descending approximately seven miles in just 60 seconds, an extraordinarily rapid drop.

The force of the impact may help explain why so little of the aircraft remained recognizable in the immediate footage. The collision, followed by an explosion and intense fire, could have broken apart and destroyed much of the structure.

Not all the debris necessarily remained inside the crater, either. Reports from the surrounding neighbourhood described fragments scattered beyond the main impact area, with some residents saying pieces had reached their homes.

Could Ice Have Contributed to the Crash?

Miami-based aviation attorney Zachary Gorwitz has raised another possible explanation for what happened.

According to reports, the pilot had contacted air traffic control shortly before the crash and mentioned icing and turbulence.

Gorwitz suggested that ice accumulation could have affected an important part of the aircraft’s control system.

At high altitudes, ice can build up on aircraft surfaces when planes encounter freezing conditions inside clouds. He pointed specifically to the horizontal stabilizer, located at the rear of the aircraft, which helps control the plane’s pitch.

If ice affects this component or sensors associated with it, the aircraft could potentially experience serious handling problems.

Gorwitz believes this possibility could help explain the sudden and steep descent seen in the footage.

He also questioned whether an ordinary engine failure would explain the apparent speed of the aircraft’s fall, noting that the jet did not appear to be gliding before impact.

A Crash at More Than 600 Miles Per Hour

Gorwitz also suggested that the aircraft may have been travelling at more than 600 miles per hour when it struck the ground.

At such an extreme speed, the impact would have generated enormous destructive force.

He explained that the severity of the collision could account for the limited amount of recognizable debris visible on the surface.

The explosion and fire may have further damaged the aircraft, while fragments could have been scattered across a wider area.

However, these explanations remain possibilities rather than confirmed conclusions. Investigators will need to examine the wreckage, flight information and other evidence before determining exactly what caused the crash.

One of the Deadliest US Plane Accidents This Year

The Greenacres disaster was described in the report as the second-deadliest plane accident in the United States this year, based on National Transportation Safety Board records.

The only accident reported to have claimed more lives was a skydiving aircraft crash in Butler, Missouri, in June, which killed 12 people.

The Florida crash was also identified by the Flight Safety Foundation as the deadliest accident involving a Learjet 60.

The previous fatal crash involving the same aircraft model occurred in 2008, when a Learjet 60 bound for Los Angeles crashed during takeoff in Columbia, South Carolina. Four people died in that accident.

For now, the exact circumstances behind the Florida tragedy remain under investigation. Experts have raised questions about the aircraft’s speed, possible icing and loss of control, but the final cause will depend on the findings of investigators.

A devastating private jet crash in Florida has raised numerous questions, particularly after videos from the scene appeared to show surprisingly little recognizable aircraft debris.
