A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded during the New York City Marathon when 24-year-old Rachel Apa collapsed just two miles before reaching the finish line.

Rachel had spent months preparing for the race. She was described as healthy, athletic and full of life, but what should have been a memorable achievement ended in tragedy.

Her final messages to her father, Steve, have made the loss even more devastating.

Rachel’s mother, Michelle, had been following the marathon in person, cheering her daughter along the route. She even recorded a video of Rachel smiling as she passed Mile 14.

Her father was watching the race from their home in Pennsylvania, sending encouraging messages as his daughter continued running.

However, Rachel’s texts began to suggest that something was wrong.

At Mile 18, she sent her father a brief message: “Ow.”

One mile later, another message arrived: “Ow ow.”

Then, at Mile 23, she sent what would become her final text:

“final stretch.”

Around Mile 24, Rachel suddenly collapsed in Central Park, only a short distance from completing the marathon.

A woman nearby immediately rushed to help. Two doctors who happened to be among the spectators also stepped in and began performing CPR.

Emergency responders arrived with a defibrillator and transported Rachel to Mount Sinai Hospital.

Despite hours of efforts to save her life, she was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.

Her father later told The New York Times that the cause of death was rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition involving the rapid breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to life-threatening complications.

The sudden loss of someone so young has left her family and loved ones devastated.

Rachel’s participation in the marathon had a deeply personal meaning.

A former field hockey player at Bucknell University, she was running to raise money for Parkinson’s disease research in honor of her grandfather, who died from the illness in 2022.

By taking part in the race, she hoped to honor his memory and support others affected by the disease.

Her goal was about more than crossing the finish line. She wanted to make a difference for a cause that meant so much to her family.

Instead, her loved ones are now facing an unimaginable loss.

Rachel was just 24 years old, and her life ended only two miles before the finish of a race she had worked so hard to complete.

Her final messages, once simple updates from a determined runner, have become painful reminders of a day her family will never forget.
