Six Months Later the Jeweller Rang Me — Because Somebody Had Brought It In to Be Resized.

My sister told forty-one people that I had taken our mother’s engagement ring out of the house while Mum was still in the chapel of rest.

Six months later my phone rang on a Tuesday morning and it was a jeweller, and he said: “Mrs. Ableforth-Diaz? I think I’ve got something of yours on my bench.”

My name is Morwenna Ableforth-Diaz. I am fifty-one.

My sister is Cressida. She is forty-eight.

Our mother was Joan and she died on the nineteenth of March last year, at home, at eleven minutes past four in the morning, and I was there and Cressida was not.

I need you to hold on to that last bit, because it explains everything that came after.

The ring is a 1961 engagement ring. Yellow gold, one small diamond, two tiny sapphires either side. It is not worth a great deal. A jeweller once told Mum nine hundred, maybe eleven hundred on a good day.

Inside the band it says J & H 14.9.61. My father’s name was Hal.

Mum wore it for sixty-three years. It came off twice, for two operations, and both times she asked for it back before she asked where she was.

There was no will. There was no list. There were two daughters and a bungalow full of a life and nobody had ever had the conversation because nobody ever does.

The funeral was on the second of April.

On the fourth, Cressida posted in the family group.

Forty-one people in it. Cousins, Mum’s bowls friends, my own children.

She wrote that Mum’s ring was missing from the bedroom. She wrote that only two people had keys. And then she wrote, and I have the screenshot, and I will have it until I die:

“I’m not going to say it. But some of us were in that house alone for four days and some of us weren’t.”

She did not use my name. She did not have to.

I was in that house alone for four days because I was the one who sat with our mother for eleven weeks while she died.

Cressida came twice in those eleven weeks. Once in the February for about ninety minutes and once on the eleventh of March.

I am not saying that to score a point. I am saying it because the sentence she chose turned the only fact that was in my favour into the thing that convicted me.

I denied it. Of course I denied it.

I rang her. She did not answer. I rang her nine times over four days.

I wrote in the group and said it was not true and that I had not touched it and that I would turn out my own house for anybody who wanted to look.

Three people liked that message.

Here is what forty-one people did with it.

My cousin Delwyn unfriended me.

Mum’s friend Berenice, who has known me since I was four, crossed the road in Marshall Street in the May. Actually crossed it.

And on the nineteenth of September, which would have been Mum’s eighty-fifth, Cressida organised a memorial lunch at the golf club for thirty people and I was not told it was happening.

I found out from a photograph.

My daughter Immie, who is twenty-four, was invited and went, because Cressida told her I had said I did not want to come.

Immie sat at that lunch for two hours believing her mother had refused to go to her own grandmother’s memorial.

That is the one I have not forgiven. Not the ring. That.

I stopped defending myself in about the July.

There is a point where every denial sounds like a confession and I hit it and I went quiet, and quiet is what everybody decided to call an answer.

And then the Tuesday.

Eleven minutes past ten in the morning, the fourteenth of October.

A man called Mr. Quill. Follett and Sons, on Cadger’s Row, which is a shop with three steps up to it and a bell on the door and has been there since 1908.

He said: “I’ve got a ring in for resizing. It’s got an inscription in it. J and H, fourteen nine sixty-one.”

And I said yes.

And he said: “I’ve got your mother’s name and your telephone number on a card in my file from 2019.”

I took that ring into that shop in the October of 2019 to have it cleaned and the claws checked, because Mum had caught it on a cardigan.

I paid for it. I left my number because Mum could not hear the phone.

He had kept the card. Six years, in a card index, in a drawer.

I said, who brought it in.

He said he could not tell me that.

Then he said, in a completely different voice: “It’s being made two sizes smaller. For a young lady. It’s going to be an engagement ring.”

My sister has one daughter. Saffron. She is twenty-two and she got engaged on the thirtieth of August.

I said: when is it being collected.

“Thursday. Half past eleven.”

And I said: “Mr. Quill. Is there a chair in your shop?”

There is. By the window, under the clocks.

I was in it at nine minutes past eleven on the Thursday with a cup of tea his wife had made me.

At twenty-nine minutes past eleven the bell over the door went.

She did not see me for about four seconds.

She was at the counter with her bag open and her card out and she was saying the name Follett had on the ticket, and then Mr. Quill looked over her shoulder at the window.

And she turned round.

I have thought a hundred times about what I would say.

I did not say any of it. What I actually said was: “Hello, Cress.”

She went white and then she went red and then she did the thing I should have predicted and did not.

She got angry.

“Are you following me?”

Mr. Quill, who is about seventy and who I would like to buy a house for, put both hands flat on his counter and said: “Madam, this lady is the registered contact for that item and has been since 2019.”

And that was it. That was the whole thing.

Here is what she took it out of.

Not the bedroom. The bathroom.

Mum had taken it off to put cream on her hands on the Monday before she died and it was in a blue dish on the windowsill, and Cressida went in there on the eleventh of March, which is the day of her second visit, and took it.

Eight days before our mother died.

She did not take it after. She took it while Mum was still alive, in the next room, with me in the kitchen.

She has never given me a reason. I have asked twice.

The nearest thing to a reason came out in that shop, in front of a jeweller, when she said: “You had her. I was never going to get anything.”

Here is the part people do not like.

I did not call the police. I thought about it for nine days.

I did not go back into the family group and post the receipt and the shop’s name and the date.

What I did was write one message, to the forty-one of them, that said six words:

“The ring has been found. Thank you.”

And then I left the group.

I want to be very clear that this was not grace. It was not me being the bigger person and I will not have it framed that way.

It was Saffron.

That girl is twenty-two and she has just got engaged and she had absolutely nothing to do with any of it, and if I had put that in writing in front of forty-one people her engagement would have had this nailed to it forever.

Her mother was willing to do that to me. I was not willing to do it to her.

That is the only decision in this entire story I am completely at peace with.

The ring is in my house. Mr. Quill would not release it to her and he was within his rights and he knew it.

It is not resized. It is in a box in a drawer and it is still a size N.

Cressida and I have not spoken in thirteen months.

Berenice wrote to me in the November. Two pages. It is a good letter and I have not answered it, and I know that is small of me, and I am not ready.

Delwyn has never said a word.

Immie did not speak to her aunt for eight months over the memorial lunch, which was her own decision and which I tried to talk her out of twice.

And here is how it actually ends, which is not how anybody expects.

Saffron got married in the June.

I was not invited and I did not expect to be.

Nine days before the wedding she came to my front door on her own, at about eight in the evening, and stood on the step and said she knew, and that she had known since the October, and that she had not been able to work out what she was supposed to do with it.

I made her a cup of tea and we sat in my kitchen for two hours.

She did not ask me for the ring. She asked me what my mother was like.

Nobody had ever asked her, because she was eleven when the bowls stopped and she had never really known her, and her own mother had never once sat down and told her.

So I told her. Two hours of it. The dancing, the terrible driving, the sixty-three years.

When she left I got the box out of the drawer and I held it out to her on the step.

And she said no.

She said: “Not like this. Ask me again in ten years.”

Twenty-two years old.

Half the people who hear this tell me I should have gone to the police the same afternoon — that six words in a group chat let my sister walk away from eight months of what she did to me, and that she will do it again to somebody else.

The other half say I did the only thing that was not another version of the same thing.

I think about it most when the drawer sticks.

It is a size N and I am a size P, so I have never once been able to wear it either.

My sister told forty-one people that I had taken our mother’s engagement ring out of the house while Mum was still in the chapel of rest.
