But for her daughter, Mariska Hargitay, she was first and foremost a mother she barely had the opportunity to know.

Mariska was just three years old when Mansfield died in a devastating car accident in 1967. Growing up, she heard stories about her mother’s intelligence, warmth and sense of humor. Yet the woman described by family members seemed difficult to reconcile with the glamorous personality Mariska saw in films and public appearances.

Why Mariska Avoided Watching Her Mother on Screen

For much of her childhood, Mariska struggled to watch her mother’s movies. One particular detail made the experience especially difficult: Jayne’s distinctive, breathy public voice.

It was so different from the mother Mariska had been told about that she found it hard to connect the two versions of the same woman.

“I never wanted to hear that voice,” she once admitted.

As she grew older, however, Mariska became increasingly interested in discovering who her mother had really been away from the cameras. Rather than accepting the familiar Hollywood image, she wanted to understand the person behind it.

That search eventually inspired the 2025 documentary My Mom Jayne.

Old Recordings Revealed a Different Side of Jayne Mansfield

While reviewing family footage and recordings for the documentary, Mariska came across moments when her mother spoke in a much more natural voice.

The discovery was deeply moving. Hearing Jayne without the exaggerated tone associated with her public persona gave Mariska a different sense of the woman she had lost as a little girl.

It felt like getting closer to a mother she had spent much of her life trying to understand.

Becoming a mother herself also transformed the way Mariska viewed Jayne. As a child, she had simply wanted the kind of ordinary family life many children take for granted: a mother at home, baking cookies and spending time with her.

Adulthood brought a more complicated perspective. Mariska began to recognize the pressures and challenges her mother may have experienced while navigating fame and family life.

The Dream That Captured Her Lifelong Longing

Among the most emotional memories Mariska has shared was a dream in which Jayne visited her home.

In the dream, Mariska was thrilled to see her mother again. She wanted to take her downstairs and show her all the photographs of Jayne displayed throughout the house.

But the reunion was painfully brief. Her mother told her that she had to leave.

Even in that dream, Mariska was left wishing for more time with the woman she had lost decades earlier.

The moment reflected a feeling that had followed her throughout her life: the desire to know her mother beyond the photographs, films and stories.

Finding a Connection Through Memories

The public knew Jayne Mansfield as a glamorous Hollywood star, but Mariska’s experience was shaped by something much more personal. She was a daughter who lost her mother before she was old enough to build lasting memories with her.

Through family stories, photographs and home videos, she has gradually pieced together a fuller picture of Jayne. The process has allowed her to look beyond the famous image and develop a deeper understanding of the woman who was also her mother.

Mariska may never have had the chance to create the everyday memories she once wished for, but discovering her mother’s more private side has given her another way to feel connected to her.

For all the fame and attention surrounding Jayne Mansfield, the most important part of her legacy to Mariska is deeply simple: she was her mother, and she is still missed.

Jayne Mansfield was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars, celebrated for her blonde hair, beauty and glamorous public image.
