Johnny’s confidence was about to become his biggest mistake.

Accused of copying Mary’s history test, he stood his ground, insisting that a night of hard studying explained their matching answers. But his teacher had spotted something far more revealing than shared facts about famous presidents, and one final question would turn his carefully rehearsed defense into an unforgettable less…

When Johnny’s history teacher noticed how closely his test matched Mary’s, she asked him for an explanation. Their correct responses to questions about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were identical, but Johnny wasn’t ready to admit anything.

He calmly maintained that he had studied hard the previous evening. After all, two students could know the same historical facts. For a moment, his explanation sounded reasonable enough: matching correct answers alone didn’t necessarily prove he had copied.

Then the teacher brought up the question asking who was president during the Louisiana Purchase. The correct answer was Thomas Jefferson, but neither student had supplied it. This time, the problem wasn’t that Johnny and Mary knew exactly the same things.

It was how Johnny had responded to something Mary didn’t know. Mary’s paper read, “I don’t know.” And Johnny, apparently forgetting he was taking a test rather than joining a conversation, had written, “Me neither.”
