She was born with spina bifida, and she has used a wheelchair since she was two.

Her chair is bright pink. She chose the colour herself. She has stickers on the wheels and a little bell on the armrest that she rings at the dog.

Eight months ago, my younger sister Brooke got engaged to a man named Ryan. And at Sunday lunch, Brooke knelt down in front of Ava’s chair and asked her to be the flower girl.

I have never seen my daughter so happy.

For eight months she practised. Every evening, she rolled up and down our hallway with a basket on her lap, throwing torn-up pieces of pink paper, counting her pushes so she’d go at exactly the right speed.

“Mommy, am I going too fast?”

“You’re perfect, baby.”

We bought the dress. White, with a little pink sash to match her chair. We tied ribbons to her wheels. She wore the dress around the house so many times I had to have it cleaned twice.

Eight days before the wedding, Brooke called me.

“So, I need to talk to you about Ava.”

Her voice was strange. Too casual.

“The photographer and the planner walked the venue yesterday. The aisle is grass. And honestly… they both think the wheelchair is going to break up the look of the photos. The whole aesthetic is very natural, very soft. It’s just going to stand out.”

I didn’t understand at first.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying I think it’s better if Ava sits in the front row with you. She can still wear the dress.”

“Brooke. She’s been practising for eight months.”

“I know. And I feel bad. But it’s my wedding. I’ve waited my whole life for these photos. I just want one day where everything looks perfect.”

I hung up before I said something I could never take back.

I called our mother. I was sure she’d fix it.

Mom sighed. “It’s her day, honey. Don’t make a scene. Ava’s little. She’ll forget.”

Ava did not forget.

I told her that night, as gently as I could. She went very quiet. Then she asked one question.

“Is it because of my chair?”

I couldn’t lie to her. I’ve never lied to her about her chair.

She cried for an hour. Then she wiped her face and asked if she could still bring her basket. “Just to hold it.”

On the wedding day, we sat in the front row. Ava in her white dress and pink sash, her basket of petals on her lap, ribbons on her wheels that I didn’t have the heart to cut off.

The music started. The bridesmaids walked.

Then there was the pause. The gap in the music where a flower girl was supposed to go.

Nobody walked.

Ava looked down at her basket.

Ryan was standing at the altar. He frowned. He looked down the empty aisle. Then he looked at the front row. At Ava. At her basket.

And then the groom stepped off the altar and started walking straight toward us.

Ryan crouched down in front of Ava’s chair, in his navy suit, in front of a hundred and twenty guests.

“Hey, Ava. Aren’t you our flower girl?”

Ava looked at me. Then at him. And she said, in her clear little voice that carries everywhere:

“Aunt Brooke said my chair would ruin the pictures.”

The guests in the first few rows heard it. I watched it travel back through the crowd, row by row.

Ryan’s face changed.

He hadn’t known.

Brooke had told him, the week before, that Ava had gotten nervous and didn’t want to do it anymore. He’d been disappointed. He’d even bought her a little bracelet to cheer her up. It was in his pocket.

What Brooke didn’t know, or didn’t think about, was Ryan’s brother.

Danny was in a car accident at fourteen. He has used a wheelchair for nineteen years. He was sitting in the third row, and he was Ryan’s best man in every way except standing.

Ryan stood up. He looked up the aisle at Brooke for a long moment.

Then he looked back at Ava.

“Well, I think your chair looks amazing. And I don’t want a single picture today without you in it. Want to go together?”

Ava’s whole face lit up.

Ryan went around behind her chair. Danny, from the third row, said loudly, “Watch her speed, she counts her pushes,” and half the guests laughed through their tears.

And Ryan pushed my daughter down that grass aisle while she threw her petals left and right, exactly the way she’d practised for eight months.

Every single guest stood up.

The photographer, the same one who apparently thought the chair would break the aesthetic, practically ran backwards in front of them to get the shot.

At the altar, Ryan parked Ava right beside where Brooke stood. Then he took the little bracelet out of his pocket and fastened it on her wrist.

Brooke didn’t say a word. Her face was red under all the makeup.

Ryan took her hands. Before the officiant could begin, he said, quietly, but loud enough for the front rows:

“We’ll talk later. But she’s in every photo. All of them.”

They did get married. I’m not going to pretend the day fell apart. It didn’t. But it wasn’t the day Brooke had planned.

Our mother didn’t look at me through the whole reception. Later, by the cake, she said, “I should have said no to her.” That’s the closest thing to an apology I’ve ever had from her.

Brooke came to my house three weeks after the honeymoon. Alone. She sat on the floor of Ava’s room and said sorry to her. Not to me. To Ava. That mattered.

Ava forgave her in about four seconds, because she’s six.

I’m taking a little longer.

The wedding album came in the spring. The first photo, before the vows, before the kiss, is a little girl in a pink wheelchair, throwing petals, with a man in a navy suit pushing her and grinning.

Ryan had a print of it made for us.

It’s on our hallway wall. Right at the spot where she used to practise.

My daughter Ava is six.
