Melania Trump mocked online after she is seen struggling to read Christmas book at Childrens Hospital

Posted on December 9, 2025 By Alice Sanor No Comments on Melania Trump mocked online after she is seen struggling to read Christmas book at Childrens Hospital

Melania Trump’s annual visit to Children’s National Hospital was supposed to be the kind of heartwarming holiday tradition we’ve come to expect from the First Lady—smiling, reading a Christmas book, spreading holiday cheer to children in need. But what should have been a simple act of goodwill quickly turned into another moment of online backlash the moment clips of her reading began circulating.

This tradition, which dates back to the era of Bess Truman, has always been about offering some holiday joy to young patients spending Christmas in a hospital, far from the comforts of home. No matter who is in the White House, the goal is simple: show up, read a book, listen to the children, and create a brief moment of normalcy in an otherwise difficult time.

This year, on December 5th, Melania Trump carried on this tradition, arriving at Children’s National Hospital to bring some cheer. Hospital staff described the visit as warm and uplifting. Two young patients, Faith and Riley, greeted her with excited energy, leading her through the halls and helping to set a positive tone for the event.

Inside a festively decorated room, Melania sat in a large red chair under twinkling lights, with a Christmas tree in the background, and read How Does Santa Go Down the Chimney?, a playful children’s book by Mac Barnett. Surrounded by a group of children, some with stuffed animals in hand, Melania flipped through the pages with a calm presence.

But once the video clips hit social media, things took a sharp turn.

On platforms like X (formerly Twitter), critics immediately focused on her delivery. English is her third language, and while she was clear enough for the children to follow along, online users honed in on every mispronounced word, every awkward pause, every hint of her Slovenian accent. The imperfections became the focus, overshadowing the intent of the visit.

Phrases like “Does he wears night vision?” were replayed, slowed down, and mocked. Commenters accused her of lacking emotion and being disconnected from the children. Some even tied their criticism to the Trump administration’s stance on immigration, pointing out the irony of an immigrant First Lady struggling with English while the administration had taken hardline policies on immigration.

“Completely devoid of emotion,” one comment read. “The kids deserve better.”

“Melania Trump struggles to read out loud. What did you MAGAs do?” another wrote.

Others mocked her accent, with jokes about her pronunciation of “Christmas” and how if she weren’t the First Lady, she’d likely be stopped by ICE. The online response quickly shifted from critique to ridicule.

Inside the hospital, however, none of this mattered. The children weren’t focusing on her cadence or accent. They were laughing at the silly questions in the book, giggling at the illustrations of Santa squeezing down chimneys, and whispering to each other about the presents they hoped to receive. They were in the moment, absorbing the experience in a way that adults on the internet often miss.

When Melania finished reading, she wished the children strength, joy, and “lots of toys.” She reassured them that Santa would find them no matter where they were spending Christmas, and she delivered a holiday message from President Trump, who also sent his love and best wishes. She handed out toys—another tradition—and spent time chatting with families one by one.

Some parents said the visit made their children smile for the first time in days, even if only for a brief moment. For those living in a hospital, surrounded by illness and uncertainty, kindness and distraction can mean more than any political debate.

But outside the hospital, the criticism raged on. Supporters of Melania argued that the backlash was rooted in bias—people weren’t criticizing her because of her reading ability, but because she was a Trump. Others insisted that the First Lady should be able to read a children’s book without stumbling, regardless of her accent. For some, the entire incident reflected the polarized nature of modern politics, where everything is fodder for attack.

What’s clear is that Melania Trump’s public appearances always attract intense scrutiny. Her accent, her reserved demeanor, her facial expressions—every detail becomes fodder for one side or the other. Some see her as aloof; others see her as composed. Her silence invites projection, and the internet eagerly obliges.

But the reality that day was much simpler. A group of sick children had a visitor who brought gifts, attention, and a break from the hospital routine. They weren’t grading her pronunciation or analyzing her body language. They were children, enjoying a Christmas story from a woman who sat beside them, offering a moment of holiday magic.

The online commentary will fade—replaced by the next controversy, the next viral clip, the next headline. But inside Children’s National Hospital, the memory that will linger isn’t the debate or the criticisms. It’s the moment of normalcy, the smiles, the gifts, and the sense that, for a brief time, Christmas wasn’t going to skip over children in hospital rooms.

Melania Trump didn’t deliver a flawless performance. But she did deliver a tradition. And for the children sitting on the floor, that was enough.
