The Donna Reed Show Star Shelley Fabares Dies at 82
Shelley Fabares, the beloved actress and singer best known for The Donna Reed Show and Coach, has died at 82.
Fabares died Saturday, August 22, in Los Angeles following a brief illness. Her family confirmed that she was surrounded by loved ones.
For millions of viewers, Fabares became a familiar face through her role as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show. She joined the series in 1958 and quickly became one of television’s most recognizable young stars.
But her career went far beyond television.
During her time on The Donna Reed Show, Fabares also launched a successful singing career. Her 1962 hit “Johnny Angel” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the songs most closely associated with her name.
She later appeared alongside Elvis Presley in three films: Girl Happy, Spinout, and Clambake.
Decades after becoming famous as a teenager, Fabares found a whole new generation of fans as Christine Armstrong on the hit sitcom Coach. She starred opposite Craig T. Nelson, and her performance earned her two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Behind the scenes, Fabares also faced serious health challenges.
She was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and underwent a liver transplant in 2000. She later became an advocate for organ donation and also supported Alzheimer’s awareness after seeing her mother struggle with the disease.
Fabares was married to actor Mike Farrell, best known for playing Capt. B.J. Hunnicutt on MASH*. The couple married in 1984 and remained together for more than four decades.
Her family remembered her not only for her remarkable career but for the warmth, humor, generosity, and love she gave to those closest to her.
