Louisiana Girl, 8, Dies After Rare “Brain-Eating” Amoeba Infection

Lillian Smart, an 8-year-old girl from Louisiana, has died after contracting an extremely rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba.”

Health officials believe Lillian was exposed while swimming in Lake Claiborne, a warm freshwater lake in north Louisiana.

Her parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, saying their daughter’s brain injuries were too severe for her body to recover.

Lillian had been hospitalized since August 15. Despite doctors’ efforts, the infection caused devastating damage to her brain.

The Louisiana Department of Health confirmed the case as the state’s first known Naegleria fowleri infection since 2013.

The amoeba is naturally found in warm freshwater and can enter the body through the nose. Although infections are extremely rare, they are almost always fatal.

But those who knew Lillian want her remembered not for the illness that took her life, but for the bright, loving child she was.

Friends and community members described her as a happy little girl who always seemed to have a smile on her face. Her community also rallied around her family during her hospitalization.

Lillian’s life was far too short, but she left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.
