Sanford & Son Star Hal Williams Dies at 91

Beloved veteran actor Hal Williams, known for his memorable roles on Sanford and Son and 227, has died at the age of 91.

Williams passed away on the morning of July 15 at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, according to his representative.

His acting career spanned more than five decades across television, film, and theater. Before becoming a familiar face on television, Williams served in the U.S. Air Force and worked a variety of jobs, including as a social worker, corrections officer, and postal worker.

In 1968, following his divorce, he decided to finally pursue his longtime dream of becoming an actor. He packed his car and drove from Ohio to Los Angeles, giving himself three years to make it in Hollywood.

His gamble paid off.

Williams appeared in numerous beloved television shows, including The Waltons, Good Times, The Jeffersons, Starsky & Hutch, MASH*, and Barnaby Jones.

In 1972, he joined Sanford and Son as Officer “Smitty” Smith, appearing alongside Howard Platt’s Officer “Hoppy” Hopkins.

But for many viewers, Williams became especially unforgettable as Lester Jenkins, husband of Marla Gibbs’ Mary Jenkins, on the hit sitcom 227. He remained a regular throughout the show’s five-season run.

His career also included films such as Private Benjamin and Guess Who, along with later appearances on Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, and The Rookie.

After more than five decades of entertaining audiences, Hal Williams leaves behind a remarkable legacy and generations of viewers who will remember his warmth, humor, and unforgettable performances.
