More Than 160 Dead as Dozens of Americans Remain Missing After Catastrophic Nepal Floods

A devastating disaster near the Nepal-Tibet border has left a trail of destruction, with the death toll climbing past 160 and hundreds of people still unaccounted for.

Nepalese authorities said 162 bodies had been recovered in the heavily affected Rasuwa region, but warned that the number could rise as rescue teams continue searching through mud, debris, and damaged areas.

More than 500 tourists are reportedly still missing, including people from 28 different countries.

Among those unaccounted for are 54 Americans, 24 Canadians, more than 100 Indians, and 33 people from the United Kingdom. More than 100 Nepalese nationals are also reportedly missing.

The disaster began when flash floods caused rivers to burst their banks, sending enormous amounts of water, mud, and debris through populated areas. Homes were destroyed or buried, while damaged roads and difficult terrain have made rescue operations extremely challenging.

The Nepalese army has deployed around 2,000 personnel for ground and aerial search-and-rescue missions.

Officials in the United States and Canada say they are working with local authorities to determine the status of their citizens and provide assistance where possible.

Investigators have also ruled out an earthquake as the cause. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a glacial collapse and debris flow triggered the catastrophic flooding and unleashed a deadly torrent of water, mud, and rock downstream.

Rescue crews are still searching for survivors and those who remain missing.

With entire areas difficult to access, authorities warn that the confirmed death toll could continue to rise.
