My Husband Said He Was Training for a Marathon Every Saturday — Then a School Called About His Daughter

For three months, I believed my husband was spending every Saturday morning training for a marathon.
He’d leave at 6 a.m., come home sweaty and exhausted, and tell me stories about his running buddies, Jake and Chris.
I trusted him completely.
Until one Thursday afternoon, his phone rang while he was out.
The caller was Parkview Elementary.
I answered, expecting it to be something routine.
Instead, a woman’s voice said:
“We just needed to tell you that your daughter isn’t feeling well and needs to be picked up.”
I froze.
“My… what?”
There was an awkward pause.
Then the woman apologized and hung up.
I stared at the phone.
My husband had never told me he had a daughter.
Then I checked his call history.
The same school had been called from his phone several times over the previous two weeks.
My stomach turned.
Had the Saturday marathon training been a lie?
Was he actually visiting another family while I thought he was running?
I decided not to confront him until I knew the truth.
The following Saturday, I pretended to be asleep when he left.
Then I followed him.
He drove to the exact park where he’d always claimed to train.
And there they were.
Jake and Chris.
They really existed.
The three men started running, laughing and checking their watches.
For nearly an hour, everything looked completely normal.
Then I saw a little girl running toward the trail with a woman behind her.
My heart stopped.
“Daddy!” the little girl shouted.
But she didn’t run toward my husband.
She ran straight into the arms of one of the other runners.
I sat there stunned.
The man was her father.
Not Nick.
I drove home feeling embarrassed and relieved.
That night, I finally told my husband everything.
The phone call.
The school.
The strange calls.
And the fact that I’d followed him.
Instead of getting angry, Nick burst out laughing.
Then he showed me his running app, race registration, training photos, and messages from his running group.
The explanation was something I never could have imagined.
Two weeks earlier, Jake’s phone had died.
He needed to call his daughter’s school, so he borrowed Nick’s phone.
He called several times because the school needed additional information.
Apparently, the school system kept Nick’s number associated with Jake’s daughter.
So when the girl became sick, the school called the number they had on file.
My husband’s number.
There was no secret daughter.
No secret family.
No affair.
Just one borrowed phone that created the biggest misunderstanding of my marriage.
Nick still teases me about it.
Whenever he leaves for a Saturday run, he smiles and says:
“I’m off to see my secret family.”
And I always tell him:
“Just make sure your phone stays out of everyone else’s hands.” 😂
