Peter Cullen, the Legendary Voice of Optimus Prime, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor behind Optimus Prime in Transformers and Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, has died at 85.

Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26, surrounded by his family. His cause of death has not been disclosed.

For generations of fans, Cullen’s unmistakable voice was the voice of Optimus Prime. He first brought the heroic Autobot leader to life in the original 1984 animated series and later returned to the role in numerous Transformers projects, including the live-action films.

But Optimus Prime was only part of his remarkable legacy.

Cullen also voiced Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh, Monterey Jack in Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, KARR in Knight Rider, and provided the unforgettable creature sounds for Predator.

One of the most touching parts of his story was the inspiration behind Optimus Prime. Cullen based the character’s calm, powerful voice and sense of leadership partly on his brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran who taught him that a true hero should be “strong enough to be gentle.”

That message became part of the character millions grew up loving.

Peter Cullen wasn’t simply a voice actor. For countless fans, he was Optimus Prime. He was Eeyore. He was a voice from childhood.

His voice may be silent now, but the characters he brought to life will never be forgotten.
