Transformers’ Legend Peter Cullen, the Voice of Optimus Prime, Dies at 85

Peter Cullen, the legendary voice actor who brought Optimus Prime to life in the Transformers franchise, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family. His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed his death. A cause of death was not immediately announced.
His family remembered him as a beloved man whose legacy went far beyond his famous roles, asking fans to honor his memory through compassion, integrity and loyalty.
For generations of fans, Cullen’s deep and unmistakable voice became part of their childhood. With more than 200 acting credits, he built a remarkable career across television, movies and animation.
The Voice Behind Optimus Prime
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated series, which premiered in 1984.
His powerful yet calm performance helped make Optimus Prime one of the most recognizable animated characters of all time.
Decades later, Cullen returned to the role for the live-action Transformers movies, connecting longtime fans with a new generation.
For many fans, it simply never felt like Optimus Prime without Cullen’s voice.
He Was Also the Voice of Eeyore
Cullen showed an entirely different side of his talent as the voice of Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.
While Optimus Prime was strong, confident and heroic, Eeyore was quiet, gloomy and gentle. Cullen’s ability to make the two characters sound completely different demonstrated his incredible range.
A Career Beyond Transformers
Born July 28, 1941, in Montreal, Quebec, Cullen studied at the National Theatre School of Canada before beginning his career in television and voice acting.
His credits included Knight Rider, where he voiced the dangerous robotic vehicle KARR, as well as Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
He also provided vocal effects for the 1987 science-fiction action film Predator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Throughout his career, Cullen voiced heroes, villains, animals, machines and countless other characters across television, movies and video games.
A Voice Generations Will Remember
Unlike many famous actors, Peter Cullen became a legend without needing audiences to see his face.
Millions grew up hearing him as Optimus Prime. Others knew him as Eeyore. Many discovered his work through movies, cartoons and video games.
