The woman had turned to acupuncture after painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications failed to provide enough relief—and reportedly caused stomach problems.

The needles, believed to be made of gold, had been intentionally left inside her knees as part of an alternative treatment meant to provide ongoing stimulation.

But doctors warn that leaving foreign objects inside the body can cause serious complications, including inflammation, infection and abscesses.

There was another concern too.

Because the needles remained inside her body, they could interfere with medical imaging. Doctors warned that patients with embedded metal needles may also face risks during an MRI, because certain metals can potentially move inside the body.
