Woody Allen Film Star and Broadway Legend Tony Roberts Dies at 85

Tony Roberts, the acclaimed actor known for his memorable collaborations with Woody Allen and his celebrated Broadway career, has died at the age of 85.

Roberts died at his Manhattan home from complications related to lung cancer, according to his daughter, Nicole Barley.

Born in New York City in 1939, Roberts built a remarkable career spanning Broadway, film, television, and voice work.

He became especially well known for appearing in several Woody Allen films, including Play It Again, Sam, Annie Hall, Manhattan, and A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy. His witty and charismatic performances often made him the perfect choice to play the loyal friend alongside Allen’s characters.

But Roberts was much more than a film actor.

He was also a respected Broadway performer, earning Tony Award nominations for How Now, Dow Jones and Play It Again, Sam. Over the years, he appeared in productions including Barefoot in the Park and Victor/Victoria, sharing the stage with stars such as Julie Andrews.

His film career also included collaborations with director Sidney Lumet, with appearances in Serpico and Just Tell Me What You Want.

Television audiences may remember him from shows including The Love Boat, Law & Order, and Frasier.

Roberts also had one of those instantly recognizable voices, which led to work narrating audiobooks and recording commercials.

Despite a career that lasted for decades, he largely stayed away from the Hollywood spotlight and remained focused on his craft.

He is survived by his daughter, Nicole Barley.
