My Dying Wife Asked Me to Find My First Love—Then Anna Revealed the Secret She Had Kept for 36 Years

Children. Grandchildren. Holidays. Weddings.

After a lifetime together, I thought there were no secrets left between my wife Carol and me.

Then, shortly before she died, she made one strange request.

“Find Anna,” she whispered.

Anna was my first love.

We had separated nearly four decades earlier, and I had spent my entire life believing we simply chose different paths.

I never imagined Carol knew more about our breakup than she had ever told me.

After Carol passed away, I found Anna.

She was waiting for me with an old yellowed envelope.

My name was written on the front.

“I wrote this to you thirty-eight years ago,” she said.

I stared at her.

“I never received it.”

“I know.”

Then she told me the truth.

After I moved away, Anna had tried to contact me. She had written me a letter because she regretted letting me go.

But she didn’t send it directly to me.

She gave it to Carol.

Carol told Anna that I was happy, that I had met someone else, and that I never wanted to hear from her again.

None of it was true.

Anna eventually discovered what had happened—but by then, I was already married.

Then Anna handed me another envelope.

This one had been written by Carol.

She had mailed it to Anna six months before her death.

I opened it with shaking hands.

The first words stopped me cold:

“Anna, if you’re reading this, then I have finally run out of time.”

Carol admitted that she had deliberately kept us apart.

She wrote that she had been terrified of losing me.

But then came the part I never expected.

She said there was something else I deserved to know.

Something she had hidden from me for our entire marriage.

I kept reading.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

“The reason I need you to find Anna isn’t because I want you to forgive me. It’s because Anna is the only person who can tell you the truth about the daughter I gave away.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“A daughter?”

Anna began to cry.

Then she whispered:

“Your daughter.”

I shook my head.

“Carol and I never had a daughter.”

Anna looked at me.

“That’s what you were told.”

Then she revealed the truth.

Carol hadn’t lost a baby, as she had told me all those years ago.

She had given birth to a little girl.

A daughter I had never known existed.

For 36 years, I had believed there was nothing I could have done.

Now I realized Carol’s final request wasn’t about reopening an old romance.

She had sent me to Anna because somewhere in the world was a daughter I had never met.

And Anna knew where she was.
