MY 4-YEAR-OLD POINTED AT MY HUSBAND’S BOSS’S WIFE AND SAID, “THAT’S THE LADY WHO BITES.”

I brought my husband and our four-year-old daughter, May, to his boss’s lavish birthday party.

Daniel had been unusually nervous all week.

“Please keep May close tonight,” he kept saying.

I thought he was worried about impressing his boss.

I was wrong.

Everything seemed normal until Richard’s wife, Vanessa, walked past us.

May suddenly pointed at her and said loudly:

“Mommy, that’s the lady who bites.”

I laughed nervously.

“She’s four. She makes things up.”

But May continued.

“She bites her ring when she takes Daddy’s phone.”

The entire patio went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“What phone?”

May explained that Vanessa had been coming to our house while I was away—and that she had seen her sitting on our couch with Daniel.

Then May said something even worse:

“She says, ‘Don’t worry, he’ll never know.’”

Daniel went completely pale.

Richard stared at his wife.

Then he asked:

“What work papers did you see, sweetheart?”

May pointed toward Daniel.

“The blue folder Daddy said was important.”

Richard’s expression changed instantly.

That folder contained confidential documents from a major merger—documents he had spent months trying to find after they mysteriously disappeared.

Suddenly, the birthday party was over.

Richard told Vanessa and Daniel they would be meeting his lawyers.

And I finally realized that what I thought was just an affair was connected to something much bigger.

Six months later, my daughter and I were living in a small apartment.

One night, she asked me if she had done something wrong by telling the truth.

I hugged her and said:

“You did the bravest thing any of us did that night.”
