After Our Wedding, My MIL Started Collecting the Gift Envelopes—Then I Discovered Why

My wedding reception was still going when my cousin quietly asked:

“Is your mother-in-law supposed to be taking the cards?”

I turned around and saw her removing envelopes from our gift box and putting them into a large tote bag.

I confronted her.

She simply smiled and said:

“I’m just putting them somewhere safe.”

Then she added something that stunned me:

“We paid for half of this wedding. I’m just holding on to our half.”

I wanted to stop her immediately, but my mother silently told me not to.

The next morning, I went to my mom furious.

Instead of telling me to confront my MIL, she said:

“Invite her to dinner.”

That night, my mother placed the wedding budget on the table and calmly asked my MIL one question:

“Was there ever an agreement that you would be reimbursed from the wedding gifts?”

My MIL hesitated.

“No. We never agreed to that.”

My husband finally confronted his mother, telling her that being his mother didn’t mean everything belonging to him was hers.
