Eric Clapton’s Last Promise to His Son Before Tragedy

In March 1991, Eric Clapton’s life changed forever when his 4-year-old son, Conor, died in a tragic accident in New York City.
Conor was staying with his mother, Lory Del Santo, in a Manhattan apartment when he fell from a high-rise window that had been left open.
The day before the accident, Clapton had spent precious time alone with his son. He took Conor to the circus on Long Island, excited to make memories together.
According to biographer Philip Norman, the afternoon made Clapton realize how much he had been missing in his son’s life. After they returned to the apartment, Clapton reportedly told Lory that he intended to become a more present father.
He was already making plans for the next day. He wanted to take Conor to the Bronx Zoo and have lunch together.
But those plans would never happen.
After Conor’s death, Clapton withdrew from public life and spent months in Antigua, where he turned to music while trying to process his grief.
His pain eventually inspired one of his most famous songs, “Tears in Heaven,” which he co-wrote with Will Jennings.
There was another heartbreaking moment after Conor’s death.
Just days before the accident, Conor had written his first letter to his father with help from his mother. The little boy wrote, “I love you,” and the letter was mailed to Clapton’s home in London.
It arrived only after Conor had died.
For Clapton, the letter became one of the most painful reminders of the son he had lost.
More than three decades later, Conor’s story remains one of the most heartbreaking chapters of the legendary musician’s life.
