6 Types of Acne and What Might Be Causing Them đź‘€

Not every acne bump is the same. Some are caused by clogged pores, while others involve inflammation and can become much more painful.

Here are 6 common types:

1. Whiteheads 🤍
Small, closed bumps that form when oil, dead skin cells, and other buildup clog a pore.

2. Blackheads đź–¤
Dark spots caused by clogged and widened pores. The dark color doesn’t necessarily mean there is more dirt—it happens because the material in the pore reacts with air.

3. Papules đź”´
Small, raised, red or pink bumps that can feel tender. They’re inflammatory and usually don’t have a visible center.

4. Pustules
These are the classic pimples many people recognize—red, inflamed bumps with a white or yellowish center containing pus.

5. Nodules
Hard, painful lumps that develop deeper under the skin. They can be more severe and may leave dark spots or scars.

6. Cysts
Large, painful, soft or firm bumps that develop deep under the skin and may contain pus. Cystic acne can cause significant inflammation and scarring.

Understanding which type you have can help you better understand what may be happening with your skin. If acne is severe, painful, or leaving scars, consider speaking with a dermatologist.
