Beasley was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Tuesday at Florida State Prison near Starke. Before the execution drugs were administered, he said, “I want to apologize for all the mistakes I made.”
A spiritual adviser sat beside him. His final meal was grilled cheese sandwiches and ice cream, according to a Florida Department of Corrections spokesman cited by the Associated Press. State rules permit requests costing no more than $40, using locally available food.
The case began in August 1995, when Monfort’s daughter discovered her mother dead in her Dundee home after two days without reaching her. Investigators found a bloodied hammer head nearby, and a witness connected Beasley to Monfort’s vehicle.
He fled Florida before being arrested and was convicted in 1998 of murder, robbery and grand theft auto.
The execution closed the criminal case decades after that discovery; neither family’s reaction was publicly reported.
