My Daughter-in-Law Returned Every Baby Gift I Bought — Then My Son Accused Me of Abandoning Them

When my daughter-in-law returned every gift I bought for my newborn grandson, I stopped trying to help. Then my son accused me of refusing to support his exhausted wife. I was stunned when I discovered what she had been told about me.

When my grandson Owen was born, I promised myself I wouldn’t become an overbearing mother-in-law. I wanted to help without interfering, so I brought diapers, clothes, blankets, and other baby essentials.

But Paige returned everything.

The diapers were the wrong brand. The blanket was the wrong material. Even a baby-store gift card came back with a simple message: “I’d rather you keep your money.”

I assumed she wanted space, so I respected her boundaries and stopped bringing gifts.

Two months later, my son Grant came to visit.

“Why haven’t you helped us since the baby was born?” he asked. “Paige is exhausted, and she’s barely sleeping.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I’d tried to help repeatedly, but Paige had returned everything.

When I showed Grant the gifts still sitting in my closet, he looked shocked.

“Paige told me you took everything back,” he admitted. “She also said she kept asking you for help, but you always refused.”

I had never received a single request.

That evening, I went to confront Paige. She finally revealed why she’d rejected my gifts: our neighbor, Denise, had warned her that I was manipulative and wanted to use money to control the family.

Then Paige showed me screenshots of messages supposedly written by me, claiming I planned to make my son and his wife dependent on my generosity.

I immediately knew something was wrong. The contact photo was outdated, and the number belonged to my old phone.

When we checked the actual neighborhood group chat, those messages were nowhere to be found.

We called Denise on speakerphone and demanded an explanation.

After several excuses, she finally confessed that she’d fabricated the screenshots.

Her reason?

She was angry because I wouldn’t let her pick vegetables from my garden whenever she wanted. I’d even offered to help her start her own garden, but that wasn’t enough.

She had turned a disagreement over vegetables into a campaign to destroy my relationship with my daughter-in-law.

Paige was devastated. She had believed Denise’s lies because she was frightened of becoming a new mother and had convinced herself that I might eventually try to control her.

But while Denise had manipulated her, Paige had also lied to Grant and blamed me for something I had never done.

“I am so sorry,” she whispered.

I told her I wanted a relationship with her and Owen, but an apology wouldn’t instantly restore the trust we’d lost. If something ever worried her again, she needed to speak directly to me instead of believing someone else’s accusations.

A week later, Paige brought Owen to my house. She apologized again, and I gave her the gifts she’d returned.

Things slowly began to improve. She started asking me questions directly, and I learned to ask before buying anything for the baby.

Sometimes she said yes. Sometimes she said no.

And I learned not to take it personally.

As for Denise, she was no longer welcome in our family matters.

I still grow tomatoes, peppers, and other vegetables in my garden. Occasionally, Denise walks past the fence and looks over at them.

After everything that happened, I think we’ve both learned something about boundaries.

Because sometimes, the biggest damage to a family doesn’t come from the people who love us. It comes from someone who wants to turn that love into a weapon.
