Hal Williams, Beloved Sanford and Son and 227 Actor, Dies at 91

Veteran actor Hal Williams, best known for his memorable roles in Sanford and Son and 227, has reportedly died at the age of 91.

Williams passed away on July 15, 2026, at his home in Rancho Mirage, California, according to his representative.

Born on December 14, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio, Williams built a television career spanning more than five decades. Before pursuing acting, he served in the U.S. Air Force and worked in several professions, including social work and postal services.

He moved to Los Angeles in 1968 to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor, a decision that would eventually make him a familiar face to generations of television viewers.

In 1972, Williams gained recognition playing Officer “Smitty” Smith on the popular sitcom Sanford and Son. He later became widely known as Lester Jenkins, the devoted husband of Mary Jenkins, played by Marla Gibbs, on 227, which ran for five seasons beginning in 1985.

His other television appearances included The Waltons, Good Times, The Jeffersons, MASH*, and Starsky & Hutch. His film credits included Private Benjamin and Guess Who.

Even in his later years, Williams continued working, appearing in shows such as Parks and Recreation, Modern Family, and The Rookie.

He leaves behind three children from his first marriage and a legacy of performances that entertained audiences for decades.

Hal Williams will be remembered for his remarkable career, warm screen presence, and lasting contribution to American television.
