Kansas Soccer Field Tragedy Leaves Two Dead as Witnesses Recall Driver’s Distressed Words

A youth soccer event in Wichita, Kansas, turned into a devastating scene on October 17 when a pickup truck drove onto a field crowded with players, families and spectators. The crash killed a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and left 10 other people injured.

Families had gathered at Stryker Sports Complex to watch the games when the sound of a revving engine suddenly interrupted the afternoon.

Erica Case, whose nine-year-old son was playing on a nearby field, turned toward the noise and saw a pickup truck moving across the complex. She recalled seeing objects and debris flying as the vehicle continued through the area.

Another witness, David Griekspoor, had come to watch his nephew play. He described hearing a series of sharp sounds before looking up and seeing the truck moving through a group of people.

The realization that people had been struck left witnesses horrified, particularly because children were among those in danger.

Two Victims Die and Ten Others Are Injured

Emergency crews responded to the scene as bystanders rushed to help those who had been hit. Some spectators reportedly assisted injured victims while waiting for emergency personnel to arrive.

Police identified the two people who died as Cole Adrian, six, and Nicholas Schafer, 35. Both were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related to one another.

Schafer was a father of three.

The 10 other injured people ranged in age from five to 68. Those hurt included several young children, among them two five-year-olds, two eight-year-olds and a nine-year-old.

Witnesses later described the difficult scenes that unfolded as people attempted to help the injured. Case also praised those who stepped forward to provide emergency assistance, including people who performed CPR.

The incident left families mourning loved ones and witnesses struggling to process what had happened at what was supposed to be an ordinary afternoon of youth sports.

What Investigators Say About the Crash

According to police, the Chevrolet pickup had been parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the playing areas and struck multiple children and adults.

The driver was identified in reports as a 34-year-old Wichita mother. She had one child participating in a soccer game at another field, while two other children were inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.

Authorities released the driver while awaiting the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle. At the time of the reports, no charges had been filed.

Investigators continued working to establish the circumstances that led to the collision. The available information did not establish why the truck entered the field or what caused the driver to lose control.

Police Chief Offers Condolences to Victims’ Families

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed sympathy for the families of Adrian and Schafer, acknowledging the devastating loss experienced by the community.

He noted that a day intended for children to play soccer and families to spend time together had instead ended in tragedy.

Sullivan also extended his thoughts to those who were injured, their loved ones and the people who witnessed the crash. He recognized that the impact of the incident reached beyond the immediate victims and affected the wider community.

The response from police and emergency services came as families attempted to understand how such a tragedy could unfold at a sporting event attended by so many children.

Witnesses Recall the Driver’s Words

In the confusion following the collision, witnesses also recalled the driver’s reaction as people rushed to assist those who had been struck and helped remove her from the pickup.

According to reporting by the New York Post, witnesses said the woman repeatedly shouted, “Oh my God, Oh my God, what have I done?”

The reported words offered a glimpse of the immediate aftermath of a crash that had left multiple people injured and two families grieving.

However, the investigation remained ongoing, and authorities had not publicly established the full circumstances behind the incident.

As the community mourned Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, attention remained focused on the injured victims, the families affected and the unanswered questions surrounding the tragedy.

What began as a day of youth soccer became an event that changed many lives in an instant, leaving families and witnesses to cope with a loss they could never have anticipated.
