Grandmother’s Final Words as 11-Foot Alligator Pulled Her Into a Florida Lake

An 85-year-old grandmother was walking her dog in a Florida retirement community when a massive alligator suddenly emerged from a lake and dragged her into the water. Her neighbor, who witnessed the terrifying incident and desperately tried to help, later recalled the woman’s final words.

Gloria Serge lived in Spanish Lakes Fairways, a 435-acre retirement community in Florida known for its peaceful surroundings and numerous lakes. However, the waters were also home to wild alligators, which residents regularly encountered.

In February 2023, Serge was walking her Shih Tzu, Trooper, when an approximately 11-foot alligator attacked.

The animal lunged toward the dog but missed, catching Serge by the ankle instead. It then pulled her into the lake.

Her neighbor and friend, Carol Thomas, witnessed the horrifying events unfold.

Neighbor Describes the Terrifying Attack

Thomas later recounted the incident in an interview with the Daily Star. She said she heard something unusual and looked over to discover Serge already on the ground, while Trooper was running up a nearby hill.

Moments later, Thomas saw the alligator emerge from the water and seize Serge by the leg.

Serge managed to surface briefly. Thomas remembered seeing her brush the hair away from her eyes while stretching out one arm, apparently struggling to stay above the water.

An overturned paddle boat was floating nearby, and Thomas hoped it might offer her friend a chance to escape.

She shouted for Serge to swim toward the boat, hoping she could push it closer so the older woman could grab hold. But Serge called back with four desperate words:

“The gator has me!”

Thomas immediately tried to intervene. She grabbed a metal pole and attempted to strike the alligator on its snout, hoping to force it to release Serge.

Unfortunately, her efforts did not stop the animal.

Serge disappeared beneath the surface again and did not return. According to the account, the alligator dragged her body to the bottom of the lake.

Trooper survived the incident without injuries.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Thomas described the helplessness she felt as she tried to save her friend.

“There’s nothing you can do,” she said, explaining that the memory continued to haunt her.

Authorities Capture the Alligator

Following the fatal attack, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission captured the alligator and euthanized it.

In Florida, alligators responsible for attacks on people are generally not relocated. Wildlife officials consider such animals dangerous, and relocated alligators may attempt to return to their original territory.

Authorities also urged residents of the community to maintain their distance from the animals and report any concerns.

Officials acknowledged that the lakes were not under direct supervision, highlighting the potential dangers of living near waters inhabited by wild alligators.

Wildlife Experts Warn Residents to Keep Their Distance

Amy Kight, executive director of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary in Jupiter, emphasized that people should maintain a safe distance from alligators.

She recommended staying at least 15 to 20 feet away and warned against approaching or attempting to interact with the reptiles.

“Do not feed them, do not mess with them, do not try to befriend them,” she said.

Her advice was simple: allow the animals to remain in their natural environment while people avoid unnecessary contact.

Alligators can move quickly over short distances, and an encounter near the water can become dangerous with little warning. Keeping pets away from the water’s edge and never approaching an alligator can help reduce the risk of an attack.

Family Left Devastated by the Loss

The tragedy had a devastating effect on Serge’s family, particularly because of the sudden and violent circumstances surrounding her death.

Speaking at a press conference after the incident, her son described the pain of imagining what his mother experienced during her final moments.

“I never could have imagined the agonizing way that my mother spent the last moments of her life,” he said.

He also explained how the unexpected nature of the attack had intensified the family’s grief.

“The sudden, violent nature of this attack, thinking about my mom in her final moments, resulted in a whole different level of all-consuming grief.”

Serge’s death served as a painful reminder of the dangers that wild alligators can pose in residential areas where lakes and waterways form part of everyday life. Even in a quiet community, encounters with wildlife can turn tragic when people and powerful predators come into close contact.
