Mother of Two Left With Brain Damage After Taking Popular Herbal Supplement

A British mother of two suffered acute liver failure after taking a popular herbal supplement, leaving her with brain damage following a cardiac arrest during emergency surgery.

Lois Kinder, 44, had reportedly been feeling fit and healthy before her condition suddenly deteriorated. In the days leading up to her collapse, she noticed that her eyes had started turning yellow, a symptom that later became part of the family’s growing concerns.

Kinder had begun taking ashwagandha gummies after discovering the supplement on social media. The herbal product is commonly promoted for potential benefits related to stress and anxiety.

Hoping to improve her general wellbeing, she started taking two gummies each day. However, she soon developed serious health complications.

In July, she was rushed to hospital, where doctors diagnosed her with acute liver failure. She subsequently underwent a liver transplant, but suffered cardiac arrest during the operation. The incident left her with brain damage.

Doctors Suspected a Link to Ashwagandha

Kinder’s husband, Ollie, has since spoken publicly about the family’s experience, hoping to warn others about the potential risks associated with supplements.

According to his account, doctors asked early in their investigation whether his wife had been taking products containing ashwagandha. They later told the family they believed the supplement was responsible for her liver problems.

Ollie said doctors had informed them of approximately 70 reported cases of liver failure following prolonged use of the supplement.

He explained that the possibility of losing his wife at just 44 years old was devastating, particularly because their children, Imogen and Jacob, could have been left without their mother.

Watching someone you love fight for their life, he said, was an experience the family had never imagined facing.

He now wants others to understand that supplements marketed as natural or beneficial can still carry serious health risks.

Doctors Feared She Might Not Survive

Kinder’s condition became so severe that doctors reportedly believed she might be brain dead. A do-not-resuscitate order was also put in place.

However, she eventually regained consciousness, surprising those caring for her.

Ollie recalled how medical staff had repeatedly warned the family that they could lose her, only for her to continue defying expectations.

Doctors reportedly brought in a retired neurological specialist to investigate why Kinder had awakened despite scans suggesting a very different outlook. According to her husband, the medical team could not provide a clear explanation.

The days surrounding her recovery were filled with fear and uncertainty for the family, who were unsure whether she would survive.

Family Faces an Uncertain Future

Although Kinder has shown signs of remarkable resilience, her long-term recovery remains unclear.

Her medical team reportedly considers her case so unusual and medically complex that they intend to publish it as a case study in medical journals. The aim is to help healthcare professionals better understand the challenges involved in treating similar cases.

Her family still does not know whether she will walk again, regain full use of her body or require long-term assistance.

Ollie said the uncertainty has been difficult, but the family remains committed to supporting her throughout the recovery process.

For now, their focus is on giving Kinder every possible chance to improve and continuing to stand beside her as they face the challenges ahead.

Her story has also prompted her husband to encourage people to be cautious when choosing supplements, particularly products promoted online as simple solutions for everyday health concerns.
