JD Vance Faces Online Backlash Over His Family’s Halloween Photo

US Vice President JD Vance sparked mixed reactions online after sharing a Harry Potter-themed Halloween video and a family photograph featuring his wife and children.
Vance dressed as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, complete with a long grey wig and robe. He also held his youngest son, Alec, who was dressed as Dobby the Elf.
The vice president shared the video on Saturday, October 31, greeting viewers as “Vice President Dumbledore” before introducing his baby son as “little Dobby the Elf.” He then encouraged people to enjoy plenty of Halloween candy.
However, it was the family photograph that attracted much of the attention on social media, with users debating the children’s expressions and Vance’s costume.
Social Media Users React to the Family Photo
After the picture appeared on X, several users commented that the children did not seem particularly excited in the photograph.
One person joked that they had never seen four children looking so unhappy, while another described them as the least cheerful-looking kids on Halloween.
Others questioned why the children did not appear more excited about the holiday, with some suggesting their expressions stood out more than the costumes themselves.
Not everyone was critical, however. Several supporters praised the family and shared positive messages about the Halloween celebration.
Some users even found the children’s serious expressions amusing, particularly the look on Vance’s daughter’s face.
The costume itself also became a topic of discussion. While some people enjoyed the Harry Potter reference, others made jokes about Vance wearing a long wig and a robe as part of his Dumbledore outfit.
The reactions ranged from compliments and humour to criticism, making the Halloween post a talking point beyond the family’s costume choices.
Vance’s Halloween Appearance Comes During a Busy Political Period
The online discussion comes as Vance has been involved in campaigning ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
His recent public appearances have also attracted scrutiny. The previous week, he faced criticism following a CNN town hall in Ohio, where he was accused by some viewers of being insensitive after joking while responding to a young woman’s question about rising prices and the cost of living.
The Halloween post therefore received attention at a time when Vance and his fellow Republicans were already facing intense public and political scrutiny.
Who Is JD Vance’s Youngest Son, Alec?
Alec is the fourth child of JD Vance and his wife, Usha. The couple announced in January that they were expecting another baby, and their youngest son was born in July.
His arrival was historically notable because it marked the first time since 1870 that a sitting US vice president’s family welcomed a newborn. In that year, Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife, Ellen, also had a son.
The family’s Halloween costumes followed a Harry Potter theme, something Vance had indicated beforehand because his children are fans of the popular series.
Alongside baby Alec’s Dobby costume, the couple’s eldest son, Ewan, dressed as Harry Potter. Their other children, Vivek and Mirabel, appeared in spider and dragon costumes.
Vance has previously written about the couple’s decision to reconsider having another child. In his memoir Communion, he described how he and Usha had initially decided against expanding their family because of the demands of public life.
He later connected their decision to the death of his close friend Charlie Kirk, writing that while one life had been taken, another had been given.
The Halloween celebration offered a glimpse of the vice president’s family life, but the photograph quickly became a subject of debate, with social media users divided over the costumes, the children’s expressions and the overall picture.
